  • [first lines; Kaiju (Japanese): Giant Beast, Jaeger (German): Hunter]
  • Raleigh Becket: [voice over] When I was a kid, whenever I’d feel small or lonely, I’d look up at the stars, wondered if there was life up there. Turns out I was looking in the wrong direction. When alien life entered our world it was from the deep beneath the Pacific Ocean, a fischer between two tectonic plates. A portal between the dimensions, a breach. I was fifteen when the first Kaiju landed in San Francisco.
  • [we see a Kaiju stomping through the Golden Gate Bridge and destroying it]
  • Raleigh Becket: [voice over] By the time tanks, jets and missiles took it down, six days and thirty five miles later, three cities were destroyed. Tens of thousands of lives were lost. We mourned our dead, memorialized the attack, moved on. And then, only six months later, a second attack hit Manila.
  • [news footage is shown of Manila being destroyed by the Kaiju attack]
  • Voice of News Reporter: …the Kaiju blood created a toxic phenomenon named Blue Kaiju.
  • Raleigh Becket: [voice over] And then the third one hit Cabo, and then the fourth. And then we learned, this was not gonna stop, this was just the beginning. We needed new a weapon.
  • [we see more news footage of countries coming together]
  • Raleigh Becket: [voice over] The world came together, pooling its resources, throwing aside old rivalry for the sake of the greater good. To fight monsters we created monsters of our own. The Jaeger program was born. There were set backs at first, the neural lobe interface proved too much for a single pilot. A two pilot system was implemented, left hemisphere, right hemisphere, pilot controlled.
  • [we see footage of Jaegers being paraded in the streets after their victories]
  • Raleigh Becket: [voice over] We started winning, the Jaegers stopped invasions everywhere. But the Jaegers were only as good as their pilots. The Jaeger pilots turned into rock stars, the danger had turned into propaganda, Kaijus into toys. We got really good at it…winning. Then…then it all changed.
  • [Alaska 2020 – alarms sound throughout a massive military hangar]
  • Alarm System: Gipsy Danger report to Bay 08, level A-42. Kaiju. Code name: Knifehead. Category 3. It weighs 8,700 tons…
  • [Raleigh awakens and excitedly jumps from his bunk]
  • Raleigh Becket: Yo, Yancy, wake up! There’s a movement in the breach.
  • [he hits Yancy’s bunk bed to wake him up]
  • Raleigh Becket: Come on! We’re being deployed.
  • [Yancy opens his eyes looking sleepy and sluggish]
  • Yancy Becket: Great.
  • [he pushes Raleigh aside]
  • Yancy Becket: Good morning.
  • [Yancy gets out of bed and Raleigh starts getting dressed]
  • Raleigh Becket: Kaiju’s Category 3, biggest one yet. Code name: Knifehead.
  • Yancy Becket: What time is it?
  • Raleigh Becket: Two.
  • Yancy Becket: A.M.?
  • Raleigh Becket: Yep.
  • [Raleigh goes towards Yancy and holds out his fist]
  • Raleigh Becket: What do you say, fifth notch on the belt?
  • [they fist pump each other, at that moment there’s a knock on the door]
  • Voice of Officer: Come on, Beckets. Time for the drop.
  • Yancy Becket: Hey, kid?
  • Raleigh Becket: Yeah?
  • Yancy Becket: Don’t get cocky.
  • [Raleigh and Yancy are making their way in the hanger towards their Jaeger, Gipsy Danger]
  • Raleigh Becket: [voice over] Years before, you wouldn’t have picked my brother Yancy and I for heroes. No chance. We were never star athletes, never at the head of the class, but we could hold our own in a fight. And it turned out we had a unique skill, we were drift compatible.
  • [we see the two brothers being suited up and then boarding onto their Jaeger]
  • Tendo Choi: Good morning, Becket boys!
  • Raleigh Becket: Tendo, what’s happenin’, my man?
  • Yancy Becket: How did that date with Alison go last night, Mr. Choi?
  • [we see Tendo in the control room as he talks to the brothers]
  • Tendo Choi: Oh, she loved me. Her boyfriend, not so much.
  • Raleigh Becket: You’re gonna get your ass kicked.
  • [Tendo chuckles]
  • Tendo Choi: A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do, brother.
  • [their commanding officer, Pentecost comes up behind Tendo]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Ready to drop, Mr. Choi?
  • Tendo Choi: Ready to drop, sir. Jaeger Conn Pod getting ready to drop.
  • [the Jaeger pod is placed in position ready for the drop]
  • Yancy Becket: Ready for the big drop.
  • Raleigh Becket: Ready to go.
  • [suddenly the pod, which is the head of the Jaeger, in which the brothers are in is dropped down and placed into position on the giant Jaeger’s body]
  • Tendo Choi: Drop-in confirmed, sir.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Initiate the pilot to pilot protocol.
  • [the pilot to pilot mind melding is activated and the Jaeger taken out of the hanger]
  • Tendo Choi: Gipsy Danger is ready and aligned, sir.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Danger, this is Marshall Stacker Pentecost ready for Neural Handshake.
  • Tendo Choi: Starting fifteen seconds, Fourteen, thirteen, twelve, eleven, ten…
  • [inside the Jaeger]
  • Yancy Becket: Ready to step into my head, kid?
  • Raleigh Becket: Please, after you. Age before beauty, old man.
  • [Yancy smiles as they get ready to mind meld]
  • Gipsy Danger AI: Neural Handshake initiating.
  • Raleigh Becket: [voice over] The drift, Jaeger tech, based on DARPA jet fighter neural systems.
  • [we see the process of how the brothers start sharing memories]
  • Raleigh Becket: [voice over] Two pilots, mind melding through memories with a body of a giant machine. The deeper the bond, the better you fight.
  • [in the command center, they keep an eye on the brothers completing their mind melding]
  • Tendo Choi: Neural Handshake strong and holding.
  • 1st Officer: Right hemispheres calibrating, left hemisphere calibrating.
  • [we see the Raleigh and Yancy completing the mind melding process and they are able to control the Jaeger as one]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Gentlemen, your orders are to hold a miracle mile off Anchorage, copy?
  • Yancy Becket: Cop that, sir. Sir, there’s still a civilian vessel in the Gulf…
  • Stacker Pentecost: Skip it. You’re protecting a city of two million people. You do not risk those lives for a boat that holds ten, am I clear?
  • Yancy Becket: Yes, sir.
  • [as they sign off]
  • Raleigh Becket: Man, that’s cold.
  • [Yancy doesn’t reply]
  • Raleigh Becket: You know what I’m thinking.
  • Yancy Becket: I’m in your brain, I know.
  • Raleigh Becket: Let’s go fishing. Here we go! Come on, bro! Put some muscle into it!
  • Yancy Becket: Just worry about yourself, kiddo.
  • [they both start making movements which makes the Jaeger walk on the water in the ocean]
  • [as Raleigh and Yancy are making their Jaeger walk through the ocean towards the Kaiju]
  • Raleigh Becket: [voice over] There are things you can’t fight. Acts of God, like you see a hurricane coming, you have to get out of the way. But when you’re in a Jaeger, suddenly you can fight the hurricane, you can win.
  • [on the Alaska coast line, a fishing boat is caught in the storm]
  • Captain Merrit: How far to the mainland?
  • McTighe: Seven miles from Anchorage, sir.
  • 1st Officer: But we won’t even make it past the shallow!
  • McTighe: No, we won’t!
  • [pointing to their radar]
  • Captain Merrit: What about that island, three miles east?
  • [the radar shows the island is moving]
  • McTighe: No! It’s two miles away, sir. One mile, sir! It’s getting closer!
  • 1st Officer: How the hell could it be getting closer?!
  • [as they look ahead they suddenly see the Kaiju rising out of the water, the fishing then gets caught between the Kaiju and Jaeger, the Jaeger picks up the boat and diverts it away from danger, then the brothers manage to use their Jaeger to kill the Kaiju]
  • [back at the control room after the brothers have killed the Kaiju]
  • Tendo Choi: I detect a plasma cannon in shallow water seven miles off the coastline
  • Stacker Pentecost: Gipsy, what the hell is going on?
  • Raleigh Becket: Job done, sir. Lit it up twice, catched our fifth kill.
  • Stacker Pentecost: You disobeyed a direct order!
  • Yancy Becket: Respectfully, sir, we intercepted a Kaiju and saved everyone on that boat.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Get back to your post, now.
  • Raleigh Becket: Yes, sir.
  • Tendo Choi: Kaiju signature rising.
  • [Pentecost looks over at the screen]
  • Tendo Choi: He’s still alive, sir.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Gipsy, we’re still getting a signature. The Kaiju is still alive! Take the boat and get out of there. Do you copy? Take the boat and get out of there now!
  • [the Kaiju rises from the water again and starts attacking the brothers Jaeger]
  • Yancy Becket: Can you move forward?
  • Raleigh Becket: I’ve got this!
  • [as they are fighting the Kaiju, their Jaeger loses its left arm on Raleigh’s side]
  • Yancy Becket: We’re hit!
  • Tendo Choi: Left arm’s gone cold, sir.
  • [as the Kaiju continues to attack the Jaeger it manages to break through the Jaeger’s hull]
  • Raleigh Becket: He’s broken through the hull!
  • Yancy Becket: Raleigh, listen to me! You need to…
  • [suddenly Yancy is sucked out of the command hull]
  • Raleigh Becket: No! No!
  • [the Kaiju then proceeds to destroy the Jaeger with Raleigh still inside]
  • Tendo Choi: The second discharge the comm. Sir, I’m not getting any signals.
  • [looking dismayed, Pentecost turns away]
  • Tendo Choi: Not signature, sir.
  • [Pentecost starts walking away]
  • Tendo Choi: What do we do now, sir?
  • [later we see an old man and a child walking on the beach with metal detectors]
  • Old Man on Beach: Now, I want you to keep your eye on that gage there. Now you know what I’d like to find? I’d like to find a whole ship, that’s what I’d like to find.
  • [suddenly his metal detector signal gets louder]
  • Old Man on Beach: Wait, wait. Wait, wait, wait, wait. Right there! Right there! There it is!
  • [the boy shovels out a small metal toy from beneath the snow]
  • Old Man on Beach: Well what is it?
  • Child: Just an old toy. We never find anything good.
  • [the metal detector signal stars beeping again]
  • Old Man on Beach: Listen!
  • [the old man looks up and sees the half destroyed Jaeger walking out of the ocean]
  • Old Man on Beach: Oh, my God.
  • [the Jaeger crashes onto the beach, the old man and the child run towards the cockpit]
  • Old Man on Beach: Stay here!
  • [the child stops and the old man keeps running until he sees Raleigh crawling out of the cockpit, Raleigh stumbles around him looking disorientated]
  • Raleigh Becket: Yancy. Yancy.
  • [Raleigh finally collapses; to the child]
  • Old Man on Beach: Run! Get help, fast!
  • [5 years later – Pentecost is meeting with UN Representatives from around the world at the military hanger in Alaska via satellite feeds]
  • American UN Representative: The Kaiju are learning our defenses. They’re adapting, evolving. We’re losing Jaeger’s faster than we can build them. Lima. Seattle. Vladivostok. Category 4 Kaiju’s are now coming through the breach. I think that you can see, Marshall, this is no longer a sound strategy. The frequency of the attacks has increased. The Jaeger’s are not the most viable line of defense anymore.
  • Stacker Pentecost: I am aware. Those are my ranger that die every time a Jaeger falls, which is why I’m asking you for one last chance…
  • British UN Representative: Excuse me, Marshall. Excuse me!
  • Stacker Pentecost: One final score with everything that we’ve got.
  • British UN Representative: Excuse me! The Jaeger program is dead, Marshall. On the other hand the coastal wall program is a promising option.
  • American UN Representative: The world appreciates all that you and your men have done, but it’s over. We will authorize you to take all remaining Jaegers to the last battle station in Hong Kong. We’re prepared to fund you for the next eight months while the coastal wall is completed. After that, you will receive no further support.
  • Canadian UN Representative: You have our answer, Marshall.
  • [the TV monitors go black as the meeting ends]
  • Tendo Choi: So that’s it? It’s over?
  • Herc Hansen: Suits and ties and flashing smiles. That’s all they are, Stacker.
  • Stacker Pentecost: We don’t need them.
  • [Sitka Alaska – we see Raleigh working as a construction worker building the coastal wall from Alaska to California]
  • Construction Foreman: Ration card time! Come on, come on! Let’s go!
  • [the construction workers gather to hear the news]
  • Construction Foreman: Now, I’ve got good news and I’ve bad news, fellas. Which one do you wanna hear first?
  • Construction Worker #1: Bad news!
  • Construction Foreman: Bad news, three guys died yesterday working on top of the wall.
  • Construction Worker #2: What’s the good news?
  • Construction Foreman: The good news is, I got three new job openings, top of the wall. Okay, who wants to work? Who wants to eat? Come on!
  • [after Raleigh is finishing his shift at the end of the day, he sees the news on the TV showing the latest Kaiju attack in Sydney]
  • TV Reporter: …yet another Kaiju attack took place. And the Kaiju, an enormous category 4, broke through the coastal wall in less than an hour. The Wall Life was claimed to be impenetrable by its builders.
  • [as the construction workers are watching the news]
  • Construction Worker #3: Why the hell are we even building this thing?
  • [to Raleigh]
  • Construction Worker #1: That thing, it went through the wall like it was nothing.
  • [Raleigh continues watching the news now showing two Jaeger pilots]
  • TV Reporter: Ironically, it was the decommissioned Jaeger, Striker Eureka, piloted by Herc and Chuck Hansen that finally too the beast down.
  • [we see the Jaeger destroying the Kaiju and then one of the pilots, Chuck Hansen, being interviewed]
  • Chuck Hansen: Look, they decommissioned the Jaeger program because of mediocre pilots. It’s that simple. That’s Striker Eureka’s tenth kill to date. It’s a new record.
  • TV Reporter: Are you still going to Hong Kong, even at a time like this?
  • Chuck Hansen: Well, orders are orders. What else am I supposed to do?
  • [not being able to stand to hear anymore, Raleigh turns to walk off]
  • [as Raleigh is about to leave the construction site he sees a helicopter landing and Pentecost stepping out of the helicopter]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Mr. Becket.
  • Raleigh Becket: Marshall, looking sharp.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Long time.
  • Raleigh Becket: Five years, four months.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Can I have a word?
  • [Raleigh takes Pentecost inside the construction site]
  • Raleigh Becket: Step into my office.
  • Stacker Pentecost: It took me a while to find you. Anchorage, Sheldon Point, Nome…
  • Raleigh Becket: Yeah, my position travels with the wall, chasing shifts to make a living. What do you want?
  • Stacker Pentecost: I’ve spent the last six months activating everything I can get my hands on. There’s an old Jaeger, Mark 3, you may know it. It needs a pilot.
  • Raleigh Becket: I’m guessing I wasn’t your first choice.
  • Stacker Pentecost: You were my first choice. All the other Mark 3 pilots are dead.
  • [Raleigh steps closer to Pentecost]
  • Raleigh Becket: Look, I can’t have anyone else in my head again. I’m done. I was still connected to my brother when he died. I can’t go through that again, I’m sorry.
  • [Raleigh starts walking off, Pentecost calls out to him]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Haven’t you heard, Mr. Becket?
  • [Raleigh stops and turns to face Pentecost]
  • Stacker Pentecost: The world is coming to an end. So where would you rather die?! Here or in a Jaeger?!
  • [Pentecost flies Raleigh to Hong Kong where they are met by Pentecost’s senior aid Mako] Mori]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Mr. Becket, this is Mako Mori. One of my brightest, also in charge of the Mark 3 restoration program. She personally handpicked your co-pilot candidates.
  • [speaking in Japanese to Pentecost; referring to Raleigh]
  • Mako Mori: [subtitled] I imagined him differently.
  • [Becket replies in Japanese]
  • Raleigh Becket: [subtitled] Better or worse.
  • [Mako looks surprised and embarrassed]
  • Mako Mori: [subtitled] I apologize, Mr. Becket. I’ve heard a lot about you.
  • [they look at each other for a moment, then she bows her head and Raleigh does the same]
  • [Pentecost, Mako and Raleigh walk into the military hanger]
  • Stacker Pentecost: At ease. You’ll get the tour of the facility first and then Miss *Mori will show you to your Jaeger, Mr. Becket.
  • [at that moment two men rush into the hanger]
  • Gottlieb: Wait for us!
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Hold the door, please!
  • Gottlieb: Thank you! Thank you!
  • [as they are riding down in the elevator; referring to the bodies of the dead Kaiju that have been kept large glass cells]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Stand back, Kaiju specimens are extremely rare, so look but don’t touch, please.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Mr. Becket this is our research team. Dr. Gottlieb, Dr. Geiszler.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Call me Newt. Only my mother calls me doctor.
  • [Geiszler chuckles, he turns to Gottlieb]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Hermann, these are human beings. Why don’t you say hello?
  • Gottlieb: I have asked you not to refer to me by my first name in front of others. I have more than 10 years…
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: I’m sorry.
  • Gottlieb: Please.
  • [noticing Geiszler’s tattoo’s on his arms]
  • Raleigh Becket: What is that, Yamarashi?
  • [pointing to the tattoo on his arm]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: This is a Kaiju? Yeah, you got a good eye,
  • Raleigh Becket: My brother and I took him down in 2017.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: You know he was one of the biggest Category 3’s ever? He was two thousand five hundred tons of awesome.
  • [there’s a moment’s pause as Raleigh gives him a cold look]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Or awful, you know, whatever you wanna call it.
  • Gottlieb: Please, excuse him. He’s a Kaiju groupie, he loves them.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Shut up, Hermann. I don’t love them, okay? I study them. And unlike most people, I wanna see one live and up close one day.
  • Raleigh Becket: Trust me, you don’t want to.
  • [referring to Geiszler and Gottlieb as they leave the elevator]
  • Raleigh Becket: So that’s your research division?
  • Stacker Pentecost: Things have changed. We’re not an army anymore, Mr. Becket. We’re the resistance. Welcome to the Shatterdome.
  • [the large metal door slide open, Raleigh enters inside a large command complex where Jaeger’s are being built and repaired, he turns and sees a large digital clock]
  • Stacker Pentecost: War clock. We re-set it after every Kaiju attack, it keeps everyone focused. The frequency of attacks is accelerating.
  • Raleigh Becket: How long until the next re-set?
  • Stacker Pentecost: A week, if we’re lucky. Our experts believe there will be a Kaiju attack even before that. This complex used to launch thirty Jaegers in five days, just like this one. Now we only have four Jaegers left.
  • Raleigh Becket: I didn’t know it was this bad.
  • Stacker Pentecost: It is that bad.
  • [pointing to one of the Jaeger’s they’re walking past]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Crimson Typhoon, China. One of the greatest. Assembled in Changzhou. Full titanium core alloys, fifty diesel engine per muscle strand. A deadly precise fighter. He’s piloted by the Wei Tang brothers, triplets. They successfully defended the Hong Kong port seven times. They used the Thundercloud formation.
  • Raleigh Becket: Oh, yeah. Triple arm technique.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Very effective.
  • [Raleigh sees the Weigh Tang triplets playing basketball near their Jaeger]
  • [pointing to another Jaeger as Pentecost continues to show Raleigh around]
  • Stacker Pentecost: That tank, the last of the T90s, Cherno Alpha. First generation Mark 1, the heaviest, oldest Jaeger in the circus. But make no mistake, Mr. Becket, it’s a brutal war machine. Those two, Sasha and Aleksis Kaidanovsky.
  • Raleigh Becket: Yeah, I’ve heard of them. Perimeter patrols, Siberia wall.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Their watch has kept out the Kaiju for six years. Six years.
  • [they watch the two pilots walks past them and Raleigh looks at their massive Jaeger]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Herc! Chuck! Welcome to Hong Kong!
  • [to Chuck]
  • Herc Hansen: Wait here.
  • [Herc walks up to Pentecost, Mako calls out to Herc’s dog]
  • Mako Mori: Max! Come here!
  • [the dog goes over to Mako]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Don’t drool over Miss Mori.
  • Herc Hansen: A pretty girl and he gets all wound up.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Raleigh, this is Hercules Hansen, an old friend from the Mark 1 glory days.
  • [Herc and Raleigh shake hands]
  • Herc Hansen: I know you, mate. We rode together before.
  • Raleigh Becket: We did, sir. Six years ago, my brother and I took three Jaeger team drops.
  • Herc Hansen: That’s right, Manila. I’m sorry about your brother.
  • Raleigh Becket: Thank you, sir.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Herc and his son Chuck will be running Striker Eureka, the fastest Jaeger in the world. First and last of the Mark 5’s. Australia decommissioned it a day before the Sydney attacks.
  • Herc Hansen: Yeah, it was lucky we were still around.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Yep, now its running point for us.
  • Raleigh Becket: Wait, running point on what? You haven’t told me what we’re doing here yet.
  • Stacker Pentecost: We’re going for the breach, Mr. Becket. We’re gonna Sheppard two thousand four hundred pound thermonuclear warheads onto Striker’s back, detonating equivalent of 1.2 million tons of TNT. And you, and two other Jaegers will be running defense with him.
  • Raleigh Becket: I thought we were the resistance. Where do you get something like that up here?
  • Stacker Pentecost: See the Russians back there? They can get us anything. Herc, shall we?
  • [Pentecost turns and walks off]
  • Herc Hansen: Good to have you back, Lieutenant.
  • Raleigh Becket: Thank you, sir.
  • [Herc walks off to join Pentecost]
  • Mako Mori: I’ll show you to your Jaeger.
  • Raleigh Becket: Miss Mori, will you give me a minute?
  • [Raleigh calls out to Pentecost]
  • Raleigh Becket: Marshall!
  • [Pentecost stops and turns to face Raleigh as he walks over to Pentecost]
  • Raleigh Becket: Sir, we’ve hit the breach before, it doesn’t work, nothing goes through. What’s changed?
  • Stacker Pentecost: I’ve got a plan. I need you ready, that’s all.
  • [Pentecost turns]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Let’s go, Herc.
  • [Pentecost and Herc walk off; Chuck calls out to the dog]
  • Chuck Hansen: Max, come here!
  • [Raleigh and Chuck look at each other for a moment before Raleigh turns to follow Mako]
  • [Pentecost and Herc meet with Gottlieb in his lab as he’s writing out equations on his blackboard]
  • Gottlieb: In the beginning the Kaiju attacks was spaced by twenty-four weeks, then twelve, then six, then every two weeks. The last one in Sydney, was a week.
  • [pointing to the predicted number from his equation]
  • Gottlieb: In four days, we could be seeing the Kaiju every eight hours until they are coming every four minutes. But, Marshall, we should witness a double event within seven days.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Mr. Gottlieb, if I’m to drop two thousand four hundred pound thermonuclear bomb I need more than a prediction.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Well, uh…that’s a problem then. You see, he actually can’t give you anything more than a prediction.
  • [we see Geiszler working in the lab dissecting a Kaiju, he throw a piece of the Kaiju’s insides on the floor]
  • Gottlieb: No Kaiju entrails over my research circuits!
  • [Gottlieb kicks the Kaiju entrails aside]
  • Gottlieb: Those are the rules, every bloody days since…!
  • Herc Hansen: Stop it! Get back to the point.
  • Gottlieb: Numbers do not lie. Politics and poetry promises these lies. Numbers are as close as we get to the hand writing of God.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: What?!
  • Gottlieb: Would you give me a moment!
  • [to Pentecost and Herc]
  • Gottlieb: There will be a double event, and there shortly thereafter, three and then four…
  • Stacker Pentecost: And then we’re dead. I get it.
  • Gottlieb: At last.
  • Gottlieb: This is where the good news comes.
  • [showing them 3D images]
  • Gottlieb: Here is our universe, and here is theirs. And this is what we call the ‘Throat’, a passing between the breach and us. We know that it’s atomic in nature. I predict that the increased traffic will force the breach to stabilize and remain open long enough to get the device through and collapse its structure.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Yeah, and that’s where I gotta chime in because really, I mean, I wouldn’t wanna go in there with that limited amount of information.
  • Gottlieb: Newton, don’t embarrass yourself.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Will you hear me out for a second? Give me a second, please.
  • [Pentecost and Herc turn to face Geiszler]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Why do we judge the Kaiju on a category system? It’s because each one is completely different from the next, right? You see what I’m saying? One looks like a shark and one looks like a fish…
  • Stacker Pentecost: Dr. Geiszler, let’s get to the point.
  • Gottlieb: Yes.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: The point is, I don’t think they’re all completely different after all. Uh…here’s some samples I collected, alright?
  • [taking out some of his Kaiju samples]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Now this one here was harvested in Sydney. And this was harvested in Manila, six years ago. They have the same exact DNA, they’re clones.
  • Gottlieb: And this is the point where he goes completely crazy.
  • [showing them a large piece of Kaiju floating in large jar of formaldehyde]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: There’s so much more to the Kaiju than we understand, and we’ve really only scratched the surface. This is the piece of Kaiju’s brain. Now unfortunately it’s damaged, it’s a little bit weak, but it’s still alive. Now I think I can tap into it using the same technology that allows the two Jaeger pilots to share a neural bridge. Well, think about that. I could tell you exactly how to get through the breach yourselves.
  • Herc Hansen: Are you suggesting that we share a drift with a Kaiju?
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: No, no. No, no. Not like a whole Kaiju, you know, just a tiny piece of its brain.
  • Herc Hansen: A neural surge would be too much for the human brain.
  • Stacker Pentecost: I agree.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: I don’t agree.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Gottlieb, I’d like your data on my desk asap.
  • Gottlieb: Sir.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: No, but his is so…
  • Stacker Pentecost: Thank you, Newt.
  • [Pentecost and Herc turn and leave]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Guys! This is the most amazing thing…
  • Gottlieb: Newton, I know that you’re desperate to be right so you’ve not wasted your life being a Kaiju groupie, but it’s not going to work.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: It is going to work, Hermann. And I’ll tell you something else. Fortune favors the brain, dude.
  • Gottlieb: You heard them, they won’t give you the equipment. And even if they did, you’ll kill yourself.
  • [Hermann turns and starts to walk off]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: I wanna be a rock star.
  • [Mako takes Raleigh to where his Jaeger is being kept and repaired]
  • Mako Mori: There she is.
  • Raleigh Becket: Oh, my God. Look at her. Gipsy Danger. God, it’s so beautiful. She looks like new.
  • Mako Mori: Better than new, she has a double core nuclear reactor. She’s one of a kind now.
  • Raleigh Becket: She always was.
  • [Raleigh here’s a voice coming from behind him]
  • Tendo Choi: How do you like the ride, Becket boy? Solid iron hull, no alloys. Forty acres of blades muscle span and a new fluid synam system.
  • [Raleigh sees Tendo walking up to him]
  • Raleigh Becket: Tendo!
  • [they embrace each other]
  • Raleigh Becket: Good to see you, buddy.
  • Tendo Choi: It’s good to see you too, brother. It’s just like old times.
  • [as Mako takes Raleigh to his room]
  • Raleigh Becket: So what’s your story? Restoring old Jaegers, showing has-beens like me around, that can’t be it. You a pilot?
  • Mako Mori: No, not yet. But I want to be one, more than anything.
  • Raleigh Becket: What’s your simulator score?
  • Mako Mori: Fifty one drops, fifty-one kills.
  • Raleigh Becket: Wow, that’s amazing. But you’re not one of the candidates tomorrow?
  • Mako Mori: I’m not, but Marshall has his reasons.
  • Raleigh Becket: Yeah, he always does, doesn’t he? But with fifty-one kills I can’t imagine what they could be.
  • Mako Mori: I hope you approve all my choices. I’ve studied your fighting techniques and strategy, even, Alaska.
  • Raleigh Becket: What do you think?
  • Mako Mori: I think you’re unpredictable. You have a habit of deviating from standard combat techniques, you take risks that injure yourself and your crew. I don’t think you’re the right man for this mission.
  • Raleigh Becket: Well, thank you for your honesty. You might be right. But one day when you’re a pilot you’re gonna see that in combat you’ll make decisions, you have to live the consequences. That’s what I’m trying to do.
  • [later, as Mako enters her own room, she turns and sees Raleigh standing with his shirt off in his room, we see the scar on his left shoulder from his last mission with Yancy, Mako quickly closes the door and peeks through her door spyhole, Raleigh then closes his door]
  • [later Mako meets with Pentecost to give him an update]
  • Mako Mori: The candidates are ready, we will commence the trials immediately, sir.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Good.
  • Mako Mori: But there is one thing.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Mako, we have talked about this, we will not be talking about it again.
  • [Pentecost turns and walks away]
  • Mako Mori: You promised me.
  • [in Japanese]
  • Mako Mori: [subtitled] I should be the one driving Gipsy with him.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Mako, vengeance is like an open wound. You cannot take that level of emotion into the drift.
  • Mako Mori: For my family, I need to…
  • [in Japanese]
  • Stacker Pentecost: [subtitled] If we had more time.
  • [Pentecost walks off]
  • [Raleigh enters the food hall area]
  • Herc Hansen: Raleigh, come sit with us.
  • Raleigh Becket: No, I’m okay. Thank you.
  • Herc Hansen: Oh, come on, there’s plenty of room at our table.
  • [Raleigh takes the tray of food Herc offers him and they move to sit at Herc’s table where Chuck is also sat]
  • Raleigh Becket: I haven’t seen bread in a while.
  • Herc Hansen: Hong Kong. Beauty of an open port, no rations. Potatoes, beans, sweet peas, decent meatloaf.
  • [to the man sat next to Raleigh]
  • Herc Hansen: Can you pass the potatoes.
  • [the man sitting next to Raleigh passes him the potatoes]
  • Herc Hansen: Raleigh, this is my son Chuck. He’s my co-pilot now.
  • Chuck Hansen: He’s more my co-pilot. Right, dad? So, you’re the guy, huh? You’re the guy who’s gonna run defense for me in that old rust bucket of yours?
  • Raleigh Becket: That’s the plan.
  • Chuck Hansen: Good. So, when was the last time you drifted, man?
  • Raleigh Becket: About five years ago.
  • Chuck Hansen: What have you been doing for five years? Something pretty important I reckon.
  • Raleigh Becket: I was in construction.
  • Chuck Hansen: Oh, that’s great. I mean, that’s really useful. You know, we get into a fight you can build our way out of there, hey, Ray?
  • Raleigh Becket: It’s Raleigh.
  • Chuck Hansen: Whatever. Look, you’re Pentecost’s bright idea. My old man, he seems to like you, but it’s guys like you who brought down the Jaeger program. To me, you’re dead weight.
  • [Chuck rises from the table]
  • Chuck Hansen: You slow me down, I’m gonna drop you like a sack of Kaiju shit.
  • [he gives Raleigh a mocking wink]
  • Chuck Hansen: I’ll see around, Raleigh.
  • [to the dog]
  • Chuck Hansen: Come on, Max.
  • [Chuck and his dog walk out of the dining hall]
  • Herc Hansen: I’d give a wide berth with that one. I raised him on me own, he’s a smart kid, but I never knew whether to give him a hug or a kick in the ass.
  • Raleigh Becket: With respect, sir, I’m pretty sure which one he needs.
  • [Pentecost and Mako have gathered candidates to test their compatibility in the fighting arena with Raleigh; Raleigh beats the first candidate]
  • Mako Mori: Four points to zero.
  • [Pentecost nods for the next candidate to fight with Raleigh and Raleigh quickly beats him]
  • Mako Mori: Four points to one.
  • [Raleigh fights the next candidate and quickly beats him, he looks over at Mako and sees that she keeps looking at him disapprovingly, he walks over to her]
  • Raleigh Becket: Okay, what? You don’t like them? I thought you selected them personally.
  • Mako Mori: Excuse me?
  • Raleigh Becket: Every time a match ends, you make this little…gesture. Like you’re critical of their performance.
  • Mako Mori: It’s not their performance, it’s yours, you jam it. You could have taken all of them two moves earlier.
  • Raleigh Becket: You think so?
  • Mako Mori: I know so.
  • Raleigh Becket: Can we change this up?
  • [pointing to Mako]
  • Raleigh Becket: How about we give her a shot?
  • Stacker Pentecost: No. Stick to the cadet list we have, Ranger. Only candidates with drift compatibility…
  • Mako Mori: Which I have, Marshall.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Mako, this is not only about a neural connection, it’s also about a physical compatibility.
  • Raleigh Becket: What’s the matter, Marshall? Don’t think your brightest can cut it in the ring with me?
  • [Pentecost hesitates for a moment, then looks at Mako]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Go on.
  • [as Mako gets ready to fight in combat with Raleigh]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Four strikes marks a win.
  • [Mako and Raleigh walk towards each other]
  • Raleigh Becket: Remember, it’s about compatibility. It’s a dialogue, not a fight. But I’m not gonna dial down my moves.
  • Mako Mori: Okay. Then neither will I.
  • [they face each other then each makes their move towards the other, Raleigh manages to take the first strike]
  • Raleigh Becket: One-zero.
  • [Mako quickly retaliates and takes the second strike]
  • Mako Mori: One-one.
  • [Raleigh then quickly takes the next strike]
  • Raleigh Becket: Two-one. Concentrate.
  • [they fight it out a little longer this time before Mako takes the strike]
  • Mako Mori: Two-two. You better watch it.
  • [they fight again for a little longer before again Mako takes the strike]
  • Mako Mori: Three-two.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Miss Mori, more control.
  • [Mako and Raleigh commence fighting again, each one equally beating the other, until finally Mako has Raleigh on the floor]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Enough. I’ve seen what I need to see.
  • Raleigh Becket: Me too. She’s my co-pilot.
  • [Mako looks at Raleigh in astonishment]
  • Stacker Pentecost: That’s not going to work.
  • Raleigh Becket: Why not?
  • Stacker Pentecost: Because I said so. Mr. Becket. I’ve made my decision. Report to the Shatterdome in two hours and find out who your co-pilot will be.
  • [both Raleigh and Mako look disappointed, as Raleigh turns to leave he sees Chuck a mocking smile]
  • [as Raleigh leaves the combat session he sees Mako in the corridor leading to their rooms]
  • Raleigh Becket: Mako, what was all that about? I mean, I’m not crazy. You felt it, right? We are drift compatible.
  • Mako Mori: Thank you for standing up for me, but there’s nothing to talk about.
  • [looking nervous, Mako turns and goes to open her bedroom door but struggles to open it]
  • Raleigh Becket: That’s my room.
  • [looking embarrassed, Mako quickly turns to walk towards her room on the opposite side]
  • Mako Mori: Excuse me.
  • Raleigh Becket: I mean, come on. I thought you wanted to be a pilot. Mako, this is worth fighting for. We don’t have to just obey him.
  • Mako Mori: It’s not obedience, Mr. Becket. It’s respect.
  • [Mako turns and enters her room]
  • Raleigh Becket: Will you at least tell me what his problem is?
  • [Mako doesn’t reply and shuts her bedroom door]
  • [we see as Pentecost is in going down the elevator his nose starts to bleed, he takes out a pill box and takes a pill; we then see the news report on the TV that Raleigh is watching as he gets dressed in his room]
  • TV Reporter#1: In the wake of the Sydney incident, which showed the ineffective nature of The Wall of Life program, many are questioning the government’s motives and wondering why the Jaeger program has been discontinued. Riots have erupted along the coastlines of several Pan Pacific cities.
  • American UN Representative: We have now relocated millions of civilians and supplies three miles inland to the safe zones.
  • TV Reporter#1: Safe zones for the rich and powerful? What about the rest of us?

Journalist: Yeah, answer the question!

  • American UN Representative: I believe The Wall Life is still our best option at this time, and that’s all I’m going to say on the matter. Thank you.
  • [Raleigh turns and looks at a photo on the wall of himself and Yancy]
  • [Geiszler is in his lab preparing his machine for carrying out his drift experiment; he speaks into his small voice recorder]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Kaiju-human drift experiment, take one. The uh….the brain segment of the frontal lobe, um…chances are this segment’s far too damaged to drift with on scientific a side. Hermann, if you’re listening to this, well, I’m either alive and I’ve proven what I’ve just done works. In which case, ha, I won. Or I’m dead, and I’d like you to know that it’s all your fault. It really is, you know, you drove me to this. In which case, ha, I also won…sort of.
  • [Geiszler attaches the drift machine equipment to his head and connects it the Kaiju’s brain fragment]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: I’m going in. Three…two…one.
  • [Geiszler presses the button which makes him drift with the Kaiju’s brain fragment; a little time later, Gottlieb finds him in drift state and tries to wake him]
  • Gottlieb: Newton. Newton! What have you done?!
  • [Gottlieb takes the drift machine off of Geiszler’s head]
  • [as Raleigh leave his room to go for his neural test in Gipsy Danger, he stops and goes to knock on Mako’s door; on the other side of the door Mako watches Raleigh coming towards her door and then she looks away, we then see Raleigh change his mind and walk away; in her room Mako hears the knock on her door, smiling as she thinks it’s Raleigh she opens the door but sees that it’s Pentecost]
  • Stacker Pentecost: May I come in, Mako?
  • [he unfolds a small girl’s shoe wrapped in a cloth]
  • Stacker Pentecost: A long time ago I made you a promise.
  • [he holds out the small shoe towards Mako]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Get ready.
  • [as preparations are being made for Gipsy Danger ‘Trail Run; to one of the engineers]
  • Tendo Choi: These transmitters are non-operative, you need to replace them.
  • [inside Gipsy, Raleigh is preparing the Jaeger and waiting for his co-pilot]
  • Raleigh Becket: Setting neural for task mode. Waiting for second pilot.
  • [Raleigh takes his position on the right side]
  • Raleigh Becket: I’m gonna take this side, if you don’t mind. My left arm’s kind of shot.
  • Mako Mori: Sure.
  • [Raleigh looks to his left, sees Mako and he smiles]
  • Mako Mori: Are you gonna say anything?
  • Raleigh Becket: No point. In five minutes you’re gonna be inside my head. You look good.
  • [they smile at each other; back in the command center]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Prepare the Neural Handshake.
  • Tendo Choi: Initiating Neural Handshake.
  • [inside Gipsy]
  • Raleigh Becket: Okay. We’re on the simulator now, Mako. Remember, don’t chase the rabbit. Grant them access, brain impulse trigger memories. Just let them flow, don’t latch on. Tune them out, stay in the drift, the drift is silence.
  • Gipsy Danger AI: Neural interface drift initiating.
  • [they begin the drift process and successfully mind meld]
  • Gipsy Danger AI: Right hemisphere calibrated. Left hemisphere calibrated. Ready to activate the Jaeger.
  • [back at the command center]
  • Tendo Choi: Okay, Gipsy. Lining up nicely.
  • [turning to Pentecost]
  • Tendo Choi: Better get ready.
  • Gipsy Danger AI: Pilot to Jaeger connection.
  • [at that moment Gottlieb rushes into the command center]
  • Gottlieb: Marshall! Marshall! I need to talk to you.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Not now, Mr. Gottlieb. I’m sure you can appreciate how important this moment is to me.
  • Gottlieb: Newton created a neural bridge from garbage and drifted with the Kaiju.
  • [Gottlieb takes Pentecost to the lab where Geiszler is now conscious and is sat looking shaky]
  • Gottlieb: I found him thrown and he’s sort of dazed, I don’t exactly know how to…
  • [they are surprised to find Geiszler conscious, he looks up at Pentecost]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: I told you it would work.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Yes, you did. Well, what did you see?
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: It was only a fragment of a brain, so really all it was able to give was a serious of uh…images or impressions. You know, like when you blink your eyes over and over and over again, all you really see are like frames. Um…it was emotional…
  • [Pentecost takes a seat next to Geiszler]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Newton. Newton. Okay, Newton. Newton, look at me.
  • [Geiszler looks at Pentecost]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Now I want you to take your time and be very specific.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Okay. Okay. Well, I don’t feel like they’re just following some sort of animalistic urge, you know, just hunting and gathering. I think they’re attacking us under orders.
  • Gottlieb: That’s impossible.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Is that impossible?
  • Gottlieb: That’s impossible.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: You know what? Why don’t you stick to the Kaiju…!
  • [Pentecost turns to Gottlieb and shouts in anger]
  • Stacker Pentecost: You! Shut up!
  • [he then turns to Geiszler]
  • Stacker Pentecost: You, keep talking.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: These beings, these masters, they’re colonists. They overtake worlds, they just…they just consume them and then they-they move on to the next. And they’ve been here before, as sort of a trial run. It was the dinosaurs, but the atmosphere wasn’t conducive, right? So they waited it out, and they waited it out. And now, you know, with the ozone, the pollution, the carbon monoxide, polluted waters…well we practically terraformed it for them. Cause now they’re coming back, and it’s perfect. See the first wave, that was just the hounds, categories 1 through 4, it was nothing! They’re sole purpose was to aim for the populated areas and take out the vermin, us! The second wave, that is the exterminators, and they will finish the job. And then, the new tenants will take possession.
  • [Pentecost rises and paces around]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: See the reason that I found the identical DNA’s in two separate Kaiju, it’s because they are cloned.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Newton, I need you to do it again. I need more information.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Well, I can’t…I can’t do it again. I mean, not unless you have fresh Kaiju brain lying around.
  • [Pentecost looks pensively at Newton]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Do you?
  • [at the command center as the Gipsy Danger trial run continues, Chuck and Herc are watching Gipsy]
  • Herc Hansen: Pretty impressive.
  • Chuck Hansen: Yeah, he remembers how to turn it on.
  • Herc Hansen: Hey,, show some respect. When his brother died he took the Jaeger back to shore on his own. I’ve known only one other pilot that’s been able to do that.
  • [back at Geiszler and Gottlieb’s lab, Pentecost inserts a disc into the computer]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Now, there are certain individuals whose business is the preservation and exploitation of Kaiju remains.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Ah, yeah. Great. Um…black market dealers, right?
  • Stacker Pentecost: They’re in and out in a matter of hours, they neutralize the acidic factor of the blood and they harvest what they need.
  • [the computer monitor shows an image of a man]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Now this guy, this is Hannibal Chau. He runs the Kaiju black market here in Asia, when our funding ran out we turned to him for help and in return I gave him exclusive rights to all Kaiju remains in the region.
  • Gottlieb: You did that?
  • Stacker Pentecost: Last days of war, gentlemen.
  • [he takes out card from his coat pocket and gives it to Geiszler]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Go to the corner of Fong and Tull. Show them that card, look for that symbol. And a word to the wise, do not trust him.
  • [back inside Gipsy, Raleigh and Mako continue their trial run]
  • Gipsy Danger AI: Calibration completed.
  • [at that moment Raleigh has flashback of his last moment with Yancy when the Kaiju broke through their Jaeger and killed Yancy, Raleigh loses control]
  • Gipsy Danger AI: Neural bridge out of alignment…
  • Tendo Choi: Both are out of alignment.
  • Herc Hansen: Both of them?
  • Tendo Choi: Both of them.
  • [Tendo tries to contact Raleigh and Mako in Gipsy]
  • Tendo Choi: Gipsy! Gipsy! You are out of alignment. You are both out of alignment!
  • Raleigh Becket: I’m okay. Let me control it.
  • Tendo Choi: You’re stabilizing, but Mako is way out.
  • [Raleigh looks over to Mako]
  • Raleigh Becket: Mako?
  • Tendo Choi: She’s starting to take the rabbit.
  • Raleigh Becket: Mako, don’t get stuck in a memory. Stay with me, stay in the now… Mako! Mako, listen to me. Mako?
  • [Mako is lost in her memory; we see a young Mako standing alone in a Japanese city, she’s crying and holding one of her red shoes in her hand, suddenly a Kaiju storms the city and chases after her, she runs and hides behind a dumpster, Raleigh is in her memory and approaches the young Mako]
  • Raleigh Becket: Mako, this is just a memory. None of this is real.
  • [to everyone in the command center]
  • Tendo Choi: Everybody out, now! Everybody out now!
  • [everyone starts running out; to Tendo]
  • Herc Hansen: Power line! The power line! Get the main power line!
  • [Tendo and Chuck try to disconnect the main weapons power line; Mako continues to be lost in her memory with Raleigh watching; back in the command center, Pentecost rushes in]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Take them off line! Take them off line!
  • [Tendo manages to pull out the power line]
  • Tendo Choi: I just did.
  • Gipsy Danger AI: Weapons disengaged.
  • [Gipsy shuts down, inside Gipsy Raleigh looks over to Mako]
  • Raleigh Becket: Mako!
  • [he takes off his helmet and rushes to Mako, who collapses to the ground looking dazed, Raleigh holds on to her and tries to comfort her]
  • Raleigh Becket: It’s alright. It’s okay.
  • Gipsy Danger AI: Bridge sequence terminated. Would you like to try again?
  • [The Bone Slums, Hong Kong – Geiszler arrives at Fong Road, Tull Street, he finds the symbol, on the card Pentecost gave him on, a street sign which shows up as an arrow under fluorescent light]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Hello.
  • [Geiszler follows the arrow and finally enters a shop which has the same symbol]
  • Wizened Man: You’re looking for some Kaiju bone powder?
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Some…some bone? Some…bone powder? Uh, no. Why would I want that?
  • Wizened Man: Male potency. I take it myself.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: I see. Uh, no. Thank you. I’m looking for a Hannibal Chau.
  • [the shop clerk indicates for the man by the door to lock the shop door, he then opens up a secret doorway by sliding open the shelf area]
  • Wizened Man: Hannibal Chau, huh? Good luck.
  • [Geiszler goes through the secret passage and enters a lab containing lots of jars with Kaiju parts in them and men working in there]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Oh, my God. Oh, my God! This place is heaven.
  • [looking at the different parts of Kaiju]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: That’s a…that’s a lymph from Category 2! And what are you working on here? Is this a cuticle? In mint condition?!
  • [he notices another man picking up a small creature]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Is that a Kaiju skin parasite? I’ve never seen them alive before! They… they usually die as soon as the Kaiju fall! I thought you couldn’t keep them alive.
  • Hannibal Chau: You can, if you soak them in ammonia.
  • [Geiszler turns and sees Chau for the first time]
  • Hannibal Chau: What do you want?
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: I’m looking for Hannibal Chau. I was told he was here.
  • [Geiszler shows him the symbol on the card]
  • Hannibal Chau: Who wants to know?
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: I really can’t say.
  • [suddenly Chau takes out a knife and sticks it under Geiszler’s nose making him scream out in pain]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Stacker Pentecost sent me!
  • [Chau takes away the knife which causes Geiszler more pain]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Aah! Oh, that’s great! That’s real great. So I take it you’re Hannibal Chau, right?
  • Hannibal Chau: Do like the name? I took it from uh…my favorite historical character and my second favorite Szechuan restaurant in Brooklyn. Now tell me what you want, before I gut you like a pig and feed you to the skin lice.
  • [after their disastrous trial run, Raleigh and Mako wait as Pentecost, Herc and Chuck are discussing them in Pentecost’s office, Raleigh paces outside as they hear Chuck shouting]
  • Chuck Hansen: She can’t control her dreams and he went out in phase three…
  • Herc Hansen: We all know what happened.
  • Chuck Hansen: We can’t afford mistakes, the Kaiju is evolving. They keep kicking our asses! He’s a has-been, she’s a rookie. I don’t want them protecting my bomb run!
  • [suddenly the door opens and Chuck walks out of the room]
  • Stacker Pentecost: You need to watch your tone, Mr. Hansen.
  • Herc Hansen: Hey, stay there. Give me a moment.
  • [Herc closes the door]
  • [Chuck turns and looks at Raleigh and Mako]
  • Chuck Hansen: You two are a Goddamn disgrace! You’re gonna get us all killed, and here’s the thing, Raleigh. I want to come back from this mission, cause I quite like my life. So why don’t you just do us all a favor and disappear? It’s the only thing you’re good at.
  • Mako Mori: Stop! Now!
  • [Raleigh raises his hand to stop her from arguing further with Chuck]
  • Chuck Hansen: Yeah, that’s right. You just hold back your little girlfriend. Once of your bitches needs a leash.
  • [suddenly Raleigh punches Chuck in the face, Chuck retaliates but Raleigh punches him again making Chuck spits out blood]
  • Raleigh Becket: Apologize to her.
  • Chuck Hansen: Screw you.
  • [Chuck attacks Raleigh and they fight until Raleigh throws Chuck against the pipes on the wall]
  • Raleigh Becket: I said, apologize to her.
  • [Chuck attacks Raleigh again, but Raleigh easily knocks him down and twists his arm]
  • [Herc and Pentecost come out of the room]
  • Herc Hansen: What’s going on? On your feet, both of you!
  • [Chuck and Raleigh rise]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Becket, Mori, into my office.
  • [Chuck goes to attack Raleigh again]
  • Chuck Hansen: No, we are…
  • [Herc holds him back to stop him]
  • Herc Hansen: This is over! You’re a Ranger for Christ’s sake! Why don’t you start acting like one?
  • [Chuck turns and leaves in anger]
  • Raleigh Becket: I went out of phase first, it was my mistake.
  • Stacker Pentecost: No. It was my mistake. I should have never let you two in the same machine.
  • Raleigh Becket: So what, you’re grounding us?
  • Stacker Pentecost: Not you.
  • [he looks at Mako, she rises from her seat with tears in her eyes]
  • Mako Mori: Permission to be dismissed, sir.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Permission granted, Miss Mori.
  • [Mako bows and turns to leave]
  • Raleigh Becket: Mako.
  • [Mako leaves the room]
  • Raleigh Becket: Sir, what are you doing? She is the strongest candidate by far. What other options do we have, huh? Tell me!

Stacker Pentecost: Do not my calm demeanor fool you…Ranger! Now is not a good moment for your insubordination! Make is too inexperienced to reign in her memories during combat.

  • [Pentecost starts to walk off]
  • Raleigh Becket: That’s not why you grounded her. I was in her memories, I saw everything.
  • Stacker Pentecost: I don’t care what you think you saw.
  • [we see flashback to when Raleigh was in Mako’s memory in which as the Kaiju is nearly upon young Mako, a Jaeger appears out of nowhere and kills the Kaiju, young Mako then emerges from her hiding spot, picks up on of her fallen red shoe and walks up towards the Jaeger, she then sees a pilot emerge from the cockpit; she smiles as she sees Pentecost for the first time]
  • Raleigh Becket: I know what she means to you. I saw…I…
  • [Pentecost suddenly turns and walks out of the room]
  • Raleigh Becket: Hey! Hey!
  • Stacker Pentecost: This conversation is over.
  • [Pentecost carries on walking off and Raleigh chases after him]
  • Raleigh Becket: Marshal! Marshal, can we just talk about this for one second!
  • [Raleigh grabs hold of Pentecost’s arm to stop him, Pentecost turns and shoves Raleigh’s hand away, he gives Raleigh a cold look]
  • Raleigh Becket: You rescued her, you raised her, but you’re not protecting her now. You are holding her back.
  • Stacker Pentecost: One, don’t you ever touch me again. Two, don’t you ever touch me again. Now you have no idea who the hell I am or where I’ve come from, and I’m not about to tell you my whole life story. All I need to be to you and everybody on this dome is a fixed point, the last man standing. I do not need your sympathy or your admiration, all I need you is your compliance and your fighting skills. And if I can’t get that then you can go back to the wall that I found you crawling on. Do I make myself clear?
  • [Raleigh nods his head, but Pentecost points to his ear to indicate that he wants to hear Raleigh confirm he understands]
  • Raleigh Becket: Yes, sir.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Good.
  • [Pentecost turns and walks into the elevator]
  • [as Raleigh and Mako enters the Shatterdome dining hall, the hall becomes quiet and all eyes turn to them; later Raleigh and Mako are sat alone having their dinner across from where Gipsy is being kept]
  • Raleigh Becket: I’m sorry, I should have warned you. First drifts are rough. You weren’t just tapped into my memories, you were tappin’ into my brother’s too. When Yancy was taken we were still connected. I felt his fear, his pain, his hopelessness and then…he was gone.
  • Mako Mori: I felt it, I know.
  • Raleigh Becket: You know you live in someone else’s head for so long the hardest part to deal with is the silence. To let someone else in, to really connect, you have to trust them. And today the drift was strong.
  • [Mako nods her head and they smile at each other, Mako looks over to Gipsy]

Her heart, when’s the last time you saw it?

  • Raleigh Becket: Not in a long time.
  • [at the command center, Tendo gets a Kaiju warning from the computer]

Voice of Computer: Movement in the breach, double impact. Signatures dilation indicator, category 4.

  • [all the rangers are gathered, along with Raleigh and Mako, as Tendo briefs everyone]
  • Tendo Choi: Breach was exposed at twenty three hundred hours. We have two signatures, both category 4, which means, Otachi and Leatherback. They’ll reach Hong Kong within the hour.

Stacker Pentecost: Evacuate the city, shut down the bridges, I want every single civilian in a refuge right now. Crimson Typhoon, Cherno Alpha, I want you to front line the harbor. Stay on the miracle mile. Striker, I want you to stay back, look after the coastline. We cannot afford to lose you, so only engage as a final option.

  • Chuck and Herc Hansen: Yes, sir.
  • [to Raleigh and Mako]
  • Stacker Pentecost: You two, you stay put.
  • [to everybody else]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Let’s go!
  • [as the Jaeger’s get into position and make their way towards Hong Kong bay]
  • Chuck Hansen: Loccent, Striker’s off the pole and we’re on the role.
  • Herc Hansen: Loccent, we’re in position and awaiting your orders.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Proceed to miracle mile, engage at your discretion. Guys, keep your eyes open, these category 4’s are the biggest we’ve ever seen both in size and weight.
  • Lt. A. Kaidanovsky: Cherno Alpha reached the target zone. Disengage and transport.
  • [the Jaeger is dropped down onto the shore]
  • Lt. A. Kaidanovsky: Cherno Alpha in position in miracle mile.
  • [they start making their Jaeger walk down the coastline]
  • Lt. A. Kaidanovsky: Cherno Alpha holding the coastline, beacon is on.
  • [back at Chau’s shop, Geiszler and Chau are standing on the balcony overlooking the street watching the people]

Hannibal Chau: Look at them. They believe the Kaiju is sent from heaven and the Gods are expressing their displeasure with our behavior, the silly bastards.

  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: And what do you believe?
  • Hannibal Chau: Well, I believe the Kaiju bone powder is five hundred bucks a pound. What do you want?
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: I need to access a Kaiju brain. Completely intact.
  • Hannibal Chau: No, no, no. The skull plate is so dense that by the time you drill into it…
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: The brain’s rotted away, but I’m talking about the secondary brain. Now we both know that the Kaiju are so large they need two brains to move around, like a dinosaur. I want to get my hands on that.
  • Hannibal Chau: Hm. What the hell do you want a secondary brain for anyway? I mean, every part of the Kaiju sells. Cartilage, spleen, liver. Even their crap! One cubic meter of crap has enough phosphorous in it to fertilize a whole field! The brain, too much ammonia. So what’s the deal, little fella?
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Well, that’s classified. So I couldn’t tell you, even if I wanted to. But it is pretty cool. So I might tell you. I’m gonna tell you. I figured out how to drift with a Kaiju.
  • Hannibal Chau: Are you funning me, son?
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: It’s fascinating how their minds work. Every single Kaiju has minds connected, they’re… they’re species has like a…like a hive mind.
  • [Chau suddenly pulls down one of Geiszler’s eyes and look into it]
  • Hannibal Chau: Holy Jesus. You’ve gone and done it, haven’t you?
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: I did it a little bit, yeah.
  • Hannibal Chau: You Goddamn moron.
  • [Crimson Typhoon and Cherno Alpha are attacked by one of the category 4 Kaiju’s, both Jaeger’s are badly hit]
  • Herc Hansen: Loccent, Typhoon and Alpha are in trouble! We’re moving in.
  • Stacker Pentecost: You are to hold your ground, do not engage. We need you to carry that bomb, do you copy?
  • [Chuck and Herc watch as one of the Kaiju is in the process of destroying Typhoon]
  • Chuck Hansen: Jesus, we just can’t sit here and watch them die! Come on!
  • Herc Hansen: Oh, screw this! Loccent, we’re moving in now!
  • [Typhoon is then knocked down and destroyed by the Kaiju]
  • Lt. A. Kaidanovsky: Typhoon’s been grounded. We will kill this bastard.
  • [as Cherno Alpha goes to attack the second Kaiju it suddenly opens its mouth and sprays them with acid]
  • Lt. A. Kaidanovsky: Cherno Alpha, we were sprayed with acid!
  • Chuck Hansen: Come on!
  • Lt. A. Kaidanovsky: Cherno Alpha’s been compromised! We need help immediately!
  • Chuck Hansen: Just hold on, Cherno! We’re on our way!
  • [Striker moves into help Cherno, but they can’t help Cherno as the Kaiju destroys Cherno]
  • Tendo Choi: We’ve just lost Cherno, sir.
  • [Striker manages to hit the Kaiju; to Chuck]
  • Herc Hansen: Ignite your air missile!
  • [as the missiles are about to be launched the suddenly Kaiju sends out a massive electromagnetic pulse, frying both Striker and command center’s electronics]
  • Gottlieb: What’s going on? What happened?
  • Tendo Choi: The blast, it doubled onto the Jaeger’s electrical circuits.
  • [inside Striker, all the electrical circuits are damaged as Herc tries to contact command center]
  • Chuck Hansen: What the hell was that?
  • Herc Hansen: Loccent!
  • Chuck Hansen: I’ve never seen that before!
  • Herc Hansen: Loccent!
  • [back at the command center]
  • Gottlieb: They’re adapting This isn’t a defense mechanism, it’s a weapon!
  • Stacker Pentecost: Get me Striker.
  • Tendo Choi: Nothing, sir. The Mark 5 digital’s fried. It’ll take me two hours to reroute the auxiliary. All the Jaegers, they’re digital!
  • Raleigh Becket: Not all of them are, Marshal. Gipsy’s analog is nuclear.
  • [back at Chau’s shop, the news about the Kaiju attack has spread]
  • Wizened Man: There are two Kaiju. We gotta out.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Hang on a second. Excuse me. What…what’s going on?
  • Hannibal Chau: They’re two Goddamn Kaiju heading straight for Hong Kong city.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: No, no, no, no. That’s not possible, there’s never been two before.
  • Hannibal Chau: Well maybe that’s cause nobody ever drifted with one before, hey?! Genius! When *Jaeger pilots drift, it’s a two way street.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Right.
  • Hannibal Chau: A bridge, right.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Of course, yes.
  • Hannibal Chau: It sets them the connection, both ways! A high mentality, you said. Maybe those *Kaiju are trying to find you.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: What…what are we gonna do?
  • Hannibal Chau: I’m gonna wait out this shit storm in my own private Kaiju bunker. But you are going to a public refuge. I tried it once.
  • [he takes off his dark glassed to reveal a scar on his left eye]
  • Hannibal Chau: Once. Now get the hell out of here.
  • [his thugs point their guns at Geiszler; one of the Kaiju reaches Hong Kong city and starts stomping the streets, Geiszler notices it and hurries into an underground shelter with hundreds of local people]
  • [as Striker’s power is gone, the Kaiju circles around it waiting to attack]
  • Herc Hansen: There’s no emergency power. I’m gonna try something else.
  • Chuck Hansen: No! Don’t disengage!
  • [as Herc breaks the drift the Kaiju attacks, which knocks Herc down and injuring his arm]
  • Herc Hansen: My arm!
  • [Chuck rushes to help Herc]
  • Chuck Hansen: Hey! Come on! Get on your feet, old man!
  • Herc Hansen: Don’t call me that!
  • [Herc rises and pushes Chuck away, they hear the Kaiju outside]
  • Chuck Hansen: He’s right outside! We gotta get out of here, now!
  • Herc Hansen: I’m not going anywhere! Now you and I are the only things standing between that ugly bastard and the city of ten million people. Now we have a choice here, we either sit and wait or we take these flare guns and do something really stupid!
  • [Herc and Chuck grab the flare guns and scramble outside]
  • Chuck Hansen: How’s your arm?
  • Herc Hansen: Ah, just give me the gun!
  • [to the Kaiju]
  • Herc Hansen: Oi, you!
  • [they fire the flares at the Kaiju]
  • Chuck Hansen: I think we just pissed it off!
  • [the Kaiju gets angry and prepares to attack, just the Gipsy Danger arrives]
  • [inside Gipsy]
  • Raleigh Becket: Alright, Mako. Get ready, this is for real!
  • [the Kaiju goes to attack Gipsy but Gipsy manages to defend itself]
  • Chuck Hansen: Come on, Gipsy! Kick his ass!
  • [the Kaiju grabs hold of Gipsy and throws it into the city streets, then as Gipsy manages to rise the Kaiju approaches]
  • Raleigh Becket: Come on! Let’s do this together!
  • [Gipsy runs towards the Kaiju and hurls itself at it, then manages to grab hold of the Kaiju and deliver some heavy blows]
  • Raleigh Becket: Elbow rocket!
  • Gipsy Danger AI: Elbow rocket engaged.
  • Raleigh Becket: Now!
  • [Gipsy manages to deliver some strikes to the Kaiju]
  • Raleigh Becket: Hang on, Mako!
  • [Gipsy throws the Kaiju down, but it rises and runs into attack Gipsy]
  • Raleigh Becket: Plasma cannon, now!
  • Gipsy Danger AI: Plasma cannon engaged.
  • [Gipsy then manages to amputate the Kaiju’s arm then knock it down, Gipsy gets ready to walk away when it stops]
  • Raleigh Becket: Wait. I think this guy’s dead, but let’s check for a pulse.
  • Mako Mori: Okay.
  • [they open fire on the fallen Kaiju and open it’s chest to reveal its heart]
  • Raleigh Becket: No pulse.
  • [inside the underground refugee shelter the Kaiju can be hear approaching]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: He stopped right above us. Oh, my God. Oh, my God. This isn’t a refuge, this is a buffet line!
  • [the Kaiju is then heard breaking in]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: He knows I’m here. He knows I’m here!
  • Girl in Anti-Kaiju Refugee: He knows we’re all here!
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: No, you don’t understand, he’s trying to get me! He knows I’m here and he’s trying to get me!
  • Girl in Anti-Kaiju Refugee: [subtitled] The Kaiju want this little dude! The Kaiju want this little dude!
  • [Geiszler turns to another man]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: What was she saying? I gotta get out of here! Let me out of here!
  • [Geiszler moves to go to the door but he’s knocked down and his glasses are knocked off his face]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Oh, come on.
  • [he starts searching for his glasses]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: This is the worst!
  • [he finds his glasses and that same moment the Kaiju breaks through the ceiling, just as it’s about to take Geiszler Gipsy arrives dragging a cargo ship in its hand]
  • [Gipsy uses the ship to hit the Kaiju until the Kaiju takes the ship from Gipsy, throws it away and knocks down Gipsy, then it turns and rushes off, Gipsy rises and rushes after it; to Mako]
  • Raleigh Becket: Catch this one, it’s moving quick. Keep your eyes open.
  • [to the helicopter pilot following them]
  • Raleigh Becket: Chopper, do you have a visual?
  • [as they search for the Kaiju it suddenly attacks Gipsy and they start fighting, the Kaiju then uses acid spray from its mouth and destroys some buildings, Gipsy grabs hold of the Kaiju]

Raleigh Becket: I’ll hold it! Grab the coolant on the left side!

  • [Mako uses the coolant to spray onto the Kaiju and freezes one of its arms, but the Kaiju shatters the ice and continues attack Gipsy]
  • [suddenly the Kaiju sprouts wings, flies off carrying Gipsy away]
  • Raleigh Becket: Temperature’s dropping! We’re losing oxygen! Both plasma cannons are shot! We’re out of options, Mako!
  • Mako Mori: No, there is still something left.
  • [Mako activates the sword]
  • Gipsy Danger AI: Sword deployment.
  • [a massive sword emerges from the Jaeger]
  • Mako Mori: For my family!
  • [they cut the Kaiju in two and as it dies Gipsy falls from its arms through the air]
  • Gipsy Danger AI: Altitude actuation off balance. Fifty thousand feet to ground contact.
  • [on Shatterdome they notice Gipsy falling]
  • Tendo Choi: Look, there!
  • [as Gipsy continues falling; heading fast towards the ground]
  • Gipsy Danger AI: Altitude loss critical. Forty thousand feet.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Gipsy, listen to me. Loosen all the shuttle doors, use the gyroscope to balance the fall out! It’s your only chance!
  • Gipsy Danger AI: Twenty thousand feet.
  • Raleigh Becket: Fuel fall, now!
  • [Gipsy heads in fast towards the ground]
  • Raleigh Becket: We’re coming in too fast! We’re coming in too fast! Brace for it, Mako!
  • [Gipsy crashes to the ground, Pentecost uses his binoculars to see that Gipsy is fine as it starts rising, everyone on Shatterdome cheers; inside Gipsy]
  • Raleigh Becket: Mako, talk to me.
  • [Mako doesn’t reply as she tries to catch her breath]
  • Raleigh Becket: Mako, you okay?
  • Mako Mori: Yeah. You?
  • [they both laugh; back on Shatterdome Pentecost turns orders Gottlieb]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Find Dr. Geiszler, now!
  • Gottlieb: Yes, sir!
  • [Gottlieb rushes off; to Tendo]
  • Stacker Pentecost: I want the two remaining Jaegers ready to a hundred percent functionality
  • Tendo Choi: Yes, sir!
  • [Tendo rushes off]
  • [to his thugs]
  • Hannibal Chau: We’re gonna harvest the skin, the talons and the wings. The Germans are gonna go nuts for that stuff. Let me see that map.
  • [one of his thugs holds out the map]
  • Hannibal Chau: Here is where the Kaiju fell, here is where we concentrate our efforts.
  • Wizened Man: We’ll get it, Boss.
  • Hannibal Chau: Right
  • [as Chau is about to enter his shop through the secret doorway, he sees Geiszler in the shop]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Hey! Okay, guess who’s back, you one eyed bitch?! You owe me a Kaiju brain.
  • [Raleigh and Mako’s return Shatterdome hangar is celebrated by everyone, Herc comes through the cheering crowd]
  • Herc Hansen: Raleigh!
  • [Herc shakes hands with Mako]
  • Herc Hansen: My kid would never admit it, but he’s grateful.
  • [Herc extends his hand to Raleigh]
  • Herc Hansen: We both are.
  • [Raleigh shakes his hand, hen then sees Chuck who gives him an appreciative nod]
  • [Pentecost enters the hangar]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Mr. Becket! Miss Mori!
  • [he walks up to Raleigh and Mako]
  • Stacker Pentecost: In all of my years of fighting, I’ve never seen anything like that. Well done. I’m proud of you. Proud of us all. But, as harsh as it sounds, there is no time to celebrate. We lost two crews. No time to grieve.
  • [he pauses for a moment]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Reset that clock.
  • [Mako notices Pentecost’s nose is bleeding, she wipes under her nose to indicate to Pentecost, he touches his nose and sees the blood, he quickly puts a handkerchief to his nose and starts walking off]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Reset that clock.
  • [at the site where the Kaiju’s remains are, Chau’s thugs quickly work to collect as many remains as they can, Chau and Geiszler walk among them]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: I still can’t believe what you did to me, I mean I could have been eaten!
  • Hannibal Chau: That was definitely the plan. Lucky for you, that didn’t become necessary.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Thank you so much. You’re so kind, I really appreciate all of this. But now do you mind telling me exactly what is taking so long for your workers to get that brain?
  • Hannibal Chau: Well, they uh…pump the cavity full of CO2, just like in any other laparoscopic surgery.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Oh, yes, obviously. The CO2’s gonna delay the uh…acidic reaction, yes.
  • Hannibal Chau: And it allows us to harvest it. But our boys need oxygen pumped into their suits, they move slowly.
  • [he takes out a walkie talkie and talks into it]
  • Hannibal Chau: What’s going on in there, boys?
  • [we see Chau’s thugs, dressed in protective suits, walking inside the dead Kaiju]
  • Wizened Man: We’ve reached the upper pelvic area, moving to the twenty fifth vertebrae. Even with the suit, boss, it smells like dead catfish in here.
  • [they reach one of the Kaiju’s brain]
  • Wizened Man: Boss, the secondary brain is damaged with fluid. Could be petroleum.
  • [on hearing this Geiszler looks visibly disappointed]
  • Wizened Man: Wait. Wait.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: What was that?
  • [Geiszler quickly grabs hold of Chau’s walkie talkie]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Why wait?
  • [Chau grabs the walkie talkie off of Geiszler]
  • [inside the Kaiju, they hear a thumping noise and movement]
  • Wizened Man: Do you hear that? It’s like a heartbeat.
  • [Geiszler grabs the walkie talkie off of Chau again]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Oh, my God. No, this can’t be. Hold on.
  • [Chau tries to grab the walkie talkie from Geiszler but Geiszler knocks his hand away and starts walking off]
  • Hannibal Chau: Hey, let me have that!
  • [to Chau]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Ssh. Ssh. Listen, listen. Listen to this.
  • [they both hear the heartbeat through the walkie talkie]
  • [suddenly Geiszler comes to a realization]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: It’s pregnant.
  • [inside the Kaiju Chau’s thugs find the Kaiju fetus, Chau and Geiszler hear his thugs screaming, Chau turns and runs off, suddenly Geiszler sees the fetus tearing through the womb and out of the Kaiju, it starts chasing after Geiszler, but it’s held back by its umbilical cord strapped around its neck, before it can kill Geiszler it strangles itself on the cord and drops down dead in front of Geiszler]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: No, no! Please, please!
  • [Geiszler looks and sees the Kaiju is not moving, as he goes to touch it, Chau suddenly comes up behind him]

Hannibal Chau: I knew it. It’s gone. His lungs weren’t fully formed. The umbilical cord tied around his neck, nobody could survive outside the womb for more than a minute.

  • [he snaps his fingers and points to his eyes]
  • Hannibal Chau: One look, that’s all I needed. I knew he wouldn’t make it.
  • [suddenly he throws his knife into the dead Kaiju baby and then pulls the knife out]
  • Hannibal Chau: Ugly little bastard. Anyway, we…
  • [suddenly the Kaiju raises its head and swallows Chau, it roars for a moment before dropping down dead again, Geiszler then finds one of Chau’s shoes on the ground]
  • [back at the Shatterdome, Pentecost is pouring water over his face when Raleigh comes up behind him]
  • Raleigh Becket: How sick are you? Why didn’t tell me?
  • Stacker Pentecost: What’s to tell? You know, them Mark 1’s, we scraped them bad boys together in fourteen months. After, all we were thinking about was radiation shielding. I ran nearly a dozen missions. I stayed on the medical radar for a while, but the last time I dropped it was in Tokyo. I finished the fight solo, but for three hours I burned. They warned me if I ever stepped foot into a Jaeger again the toll would be too much. You and I are the only two that ever ran solo combat. That’s why I brought you here.
  • [they’re interrupted by a beeping noise, Pentecost takes the call from Tendo
  • Stacker Pentecost: What is it?
  • Tendo Choi: Sir, it’s happening. I just got two signatures with unprecedented dilation, forty meters spikes.
  • Stacker Pentecost: What category?
  • Tendo Choi: Checking the ratios, category 4.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Where are they headed?
  • Tendo Choi: That’s the thing, they’re not heading anywhere. They’re harboring just above the breach. It’s…it’s like they’re protecting it or something.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Alright, Gipsy, Striker on deck.
  • Tendo Choi: Sir, Herc cannot ride. His arm…
  • Stacker Pentecost: You heard me.
  • [Gottlieb has joined Geiszler on mainland as Geiszler prepares to get the dead baby Kaiju’s brain; Gottlieb is on the phone]
  • Gottlieb: Two signatures? Two?!
  • [to Geiszler]
  • Gottlieb: There…there are two Kaiju signatures in the breach not three like I predicted!
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Hermann! I haven’t exactly had a very good day, okay?! I’ve got about five minutes…
  • Gottlieb: It should be three.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Before brain death occurs here! I don’t want to spend it talking about your theories!
  • Gottlieb: This is all wrong. There should be three Kaiju’s coming through, not two!
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Alright, there should be three and there’s two. I’m sorry. It hurts to be wrong, doesn’t it, Hermann?
  • Gottlieb: I’m not wrong, but there is something here that we don’t understand.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Oh, yeah. Hermann, hopefully we can argue about any mistakes you made in your predictive model in the future, but in the meantime, the neural interface is way off the charts! If you want to help, help with that!
  • Gottlieb: No, I am not wrong. There is only one way to make sure.
  • [he starts typing on the computer]
  • Gottlieb: And that is to do this…together. I’ll go with you. That’s what the Jaeger pilots do, share the neural lobe.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: You’re serious? You would do that for me? Or, you would…you would do that with me.
  • Gottlieb: Well, with worldwide destruction as a certain alternative…do I really have a choice?
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Let’s say it with me, my man.
  • [he holds up his hand towards Gottlieb]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: We’re gonna own this bad boy!
  • [Gottlieb extends his hand, struggling to find a way to hold Geiszler’s hand]
  • Gottlieb: By Jove, we are going to own this thing for sure!
  • [he finally manages to grab hold of Geiszler’s hand and Geiszler laughs with excitement]
  • [back on Shatterdome, as everyone is getting ready for the two Jaegers to go out again]
  • Chuck Hansen: Oi, Tendo. Tendo!
  • Tendo Choi: You’re not suited up.
  • Chuck Hansen: Yeah, I’m aware of that, Elvis. I need to know what’s going on.
  • Tendo Choi: I said, suit up. So suit up.
  • [Tendo starts to walk off]
  • Chuck Hansen: Tendo, I can’t pilot Striker on my own now, can I? Dad’s hurt, so who’s gonna be my co-pilot?
  • [at that moment the hangar door opens and Pentecost, all suited up, walks in towards Chuck]
  • [referring to his suit]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Don’t remember it being so tight.
  • [he starts walking away, Mako joins him]
  • Mako Mori: Getting back into that Jaeger will kill you.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Not getting into one will kill us all. Listen, you are a brave girl. I was so lucky to have seen you grow. But if I’m going to do this, I need you to protect me.
  • [tears roll down Mako’s face]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Can you do that?
  • [Mako smiles through her tears and nods]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Hey.
  • [he touches her chin affectionately]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Everyone! Listen up!
  • [everyone in the hangar comes towards Pentecost, he steps onto the foot of his Jaeger]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Today…today…at the edge of our hope, at the end of our time, we have chosen not only to believe in ourselves, but in each other. Today there’s not a man nor woman in here that shall stand alone. Not today. Today we face the monsters that are at our door and bring the fight to them! Today we are canceling the apocalypse!
  • [everyone cheers and claps]
  • [as they make their way to board Striker]
  • Chuck Hansen: Hey, Marshal! You know, that was a great speech. But, uh…how exactly are you and I are supposed to match up in there?
  • Stacker Pentecost: By carrying nothing into the drift. No memories, no fear, no rank. And as for you, you’re easy. You’re an egotistical jerk with daddy issues, a simple puzzle I solved on day one.
  • [they see Herc walking towards them with his dog]
  • Stacker Pentecost: But you are your father’s son, so we’ll drift just fine.
  • Chuck Hansen: Works for me.
  • [Pentecost turns and enters the elevator]
  • [Chuck turns and walks towards his father]
  • Herc Hansen: Hey, now. When you drift with someone, you feel like there’s nothing to talk about. I just don’t want to regret all the things that I’ve never said out loud.
  • Chuck Hansen: Dad…you don’t need to. I know them all. I always have.
  • [their dog barks and Chuck bends down to pet it]
  • Chuck Hansen: Hey, handsome. Oh, I’m gonna miss you.
  • [he kisses the dog then rises to face Herc again]
  • Chuck Hansen: You look after him for me.
  • [Chuck turns and starts walking towards Pentecost who’s waiting in the elevator]
  • Herc Hansen: Stacker! That’s my son you got there. My son.
  • [Chuck stops and looks at Herc with tears in eyes before turning to join Pentecost]
  • [inside Gipsy as they get ready to drift]
  • IRaleigh Becket: You know, Mako, all those years I spent living in the past, I never really thought about the future. Until now.
  • [there’s a moment’s pause as they look at each other]
  • Raleigh Becket: I never did have very good timing.
  • [they are then dropped down to join onto the body of Gipsy]
  • [Geiszler and Gottlieb prepare to mind meld with the newborn Kaiju’s brain]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: You ready for this?
  • [Geiszler and Gottlieb turn to face the Kaiju]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Initiating Neural Handshake. In five, four, three, two, one…
  • [Geiszler presses the button and the two drift with the Kaiju, when the process finishes both Geiszler and Gottlieb look shaken]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Are you okay?
  • Gottlieb: Yes, of course. Completely fine.
  • [they take their head gear off and suddenly Gottlieb starts to hurl, he sees an abandoned toilet nearby, quickly runs to it and throws up inside it; Geiszler passes him a tissue]
  • Gottlieb: The drift, you saw it?
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Yeah.
  • Gottlieb: Did you?
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Listen, we have to warn them. The Jaegers, the breach, the plan…
  • Gottlieb: It’s not going to work.
  • [we see Gipsy and Striker being dropped off into the middle of the ocean]
  • Chuck Hansen: Loccent, open all shields. Ready to submerge.
  • Raleigh Becket: Open all shields, ready to submerge.
  • [Gipsy and Striker submerge into the water and start stomping towards the breach; back at the command center]
  • Engineer: Both Neural Handshakes at a hundred percent.
  • Tendo Choi: Neural Handshake confirmed, sir.
  • [to Gipsy and Striker]
  • Herc Hansen: Two active solid circle formation with one quadrant, code name Scunner, Raiju. Both category 4.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Roger that.
  • [to Chuck]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Half a mile to the ocean cliff, we jump! It’s three thousand meters to the breach!
  • Chuck Hansen: Half a mile?! I can’t even see a damn inch in here! How are we supposed to deliver the bomb?
  • [inside Gipsy]
  • Raleigh Becket: Visibility zero. Switching to instruments now.
  • [Gipsy and Striker continue stomping through the bottom of the ocean, suddenly something moves near Gipsy]
  • Tendo Choi: Sir!
  • Herc Hansen: Gipsy, there’s a movement on your right. Three o’clock. Three o’clock!
  • Gipsy Danger AI: One hundred feet radius clear.
  • Raleigh Becket: Right side’s clear, I got nothing!
  • Tendo Choi: Left now! It’s moving fast! Fastest Kaiju on record!
  • Raleigh Becket: I don’t see anything! It’s moving too fast!
  • Chuck Hansen: Eyes on the prize, Gipsy! Six hundred meters from the drop.
  • [as Gipsy and Striker continue their decent into the bottom of the ocean]
  • Chuck Hansen: Four hundred meters and closing!
  • Tendo Choi: Kaijus are stopping.
  • Herc Hansen: Striker, Kaijus have stopped. One o’clock.
  • [Stacker stops Striker from moving ahead]
  • Chuck Hansen: Marshall, what are you doing?!
  • Stacker Pentecost: They’re stopping! Why the hell would they stop?
  • Chuck Hansen: I don’t give a damn, sir! We’re three hundred meters from the jump!
  • Stacker Pentecost: Something’s not right!
  • Herc Hansen: Striker, the Kaiju aren’t falling. Take the leap, now!
  • [at that moment Geiszler and Gottlieb run into the command center]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Don’t do it! Don’t do it! It’s not gonna work!
  • [to Herc]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Move, you fascist!
  • [he takes the microphone from Herc]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Blowing up the breach, it’s not gonna work!
  • Stacker Pentecost: What do you mean? What’s not gonna work?
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Sir, just because the breach’s open, does not mean you’ll be able to get a bomb through.
  • Gottlieb: The breach genetically reads the Kaiju like a bar code at the supermarket and then lets them pass.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: Okay, so you’re gonna have to fool the breach into thinking that you have the same code!
  • Raleigh Becket: And how are we supposed to do that?
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: By making it think you are a Kaiju.
  • Gottlieb: You have to hold onto the Kaiju, ride it into the breach, the throat will then read the Kaiju’s genetic code and let you pass.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: If you don’t do it, the bomb will deflect off the breach, like it always has, and the mission will fail!
  • [Herc grabs the microphone off of Geiszler]
  • Herc Hansen: Now, I know you heard all that. Striker, take the leap!
  • Tendo Choi: Sir, every there’s a third signature emerging from the breach.
  • [to Striker and Gipsy]
  • Herc Hansen: Third signature emerging from the breach!
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: It’s a triple event.
  • Gottlieb: Lord, I was right.
  • Stacker Pentecost: How big is it? What category?
  • [to Herc]
  • Tendo Choi: Category 5.
  • Herc Hansen: Striker, it’s category 5. The first ever.
  • [suddenly the third, massive Kaiju appears from the portal]
  • Raleigh Becket: Striker, we see him. We’re right behind you, about a hundred meters. We’re gonna come around you three o’clock and try to flank him, standard two team formation. Just keep him busy…
  • [suddenly Gipsy is attacked by one of the other Kaiju’s]
  • [as Gipsy is fighting the Kaiju, the category 5 Kaiju gets ready to attack Striker]
  • Stacker Pentecost: Brace for impact!
  • [the Kaiju uses its talon to push Striker down]
  • Gipsy Danger AI: Chainsaw deployed.
  • [Gipsy uses its chainsaw to strike the Kaiju attacking it]
  • Raleigh Becket: Let’s get this son of a bitch!
  • [as they try to kill the Kaiju, Gipsy is severely damaged]
  • Chuck Hansen: Gipsy, the Kaiju’s twelve o’clock. Full speed! Get out of the way!
  • [the Kaiju starts coming their way, Gipsy raises its chainsaw and cuts the Kaiju straight down the middle, killing it]
  • [Striker rises from the ground]
  • Chuck Hansen: We’re still up, but the hull is compromised. Half our system’s offline, sir.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Will you help me override the…
  • [suddenly one of the two remaining Kaiju attack Striker, but Striker manages to hit the Kaiju aside, this makes the Kaiju call out to the second Kaiju]
  • Tendo Choi: Both Kaiju’s are approaching on Striker, fast!
  • Raleigh Becket: Just hang on, Striker. We’re coming to you.
  • [Gipsy, with its damaged leg, limps towards Striker]
  • Stacker Pentecost: No, Gipsy do not come to our aide! Do you copy?
  • Raleigh Becket: Hang on!
  • Stacker Pentecost: Stand far back as you can!
  • Raleigh Becket: We can still reach you. We’re coming for you!
  • Stacker Pentecost: No, Raleigh. Listen to me! You know exactly what you have to do!
  • Gipsy Danger AI: Gipsy is nuclear, take her to the breach!
  • Raleigh Becket: I hear you, sir. Heading for the breach, now.
  • Structural damage eighty percent.
  • Stacker Pentecost: Mako, listen! You can finish this! I’ll always be there for you. You can always find me in a drift.
  • [Mako looks distraught]
  • Raleigh Becket: We’re a walking nuclear reactor. We can destroy the breach.
  • [Mako nods and Gipsy gets ready to walk towards the breach]
  • Chuck Hansen: What can we do, sir?
  • Stacker Pentecost: We can clear a path, for the lady.
  • [back at the command center]
  • Tendo Choi: They’re gonna detonate the bomb.
  • Chuck Hansen: Well, my father always said…he said if you have a shot, you take it. So let’s do this!
  • [Herc closes his eyes as he realized what this means for Pentecost and Chuck]
  • Chuck Hansen: It was a pleasure, sir.
  • [Pentecost nods his head, they get ready to detonate the bomb, in that moment the two Kaiju start approaching Striker]
  • Mako Mori: Goodbye, sir. You’ll always be with me.
  • [suddenly the nuclear bomb explodes destroying Striker, Gipsy tries to shield itself from the massive nuclear tidal wave]
  • Gipsy Danger AI: All systems are critical.
  • Raleigh Becket: Systems are critical. Fuel’s leaking. Our right leg’s crippled! Let’s finish this!
  • [back at the command center]
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: What are they doing?
  • Herc Hansen: Finishing the mission.
  • Raleigh Becket: Loccent, we have the Kaiju carcass. We’re heading for the breach. You guys, I hope you’re right. Cause one way or another, we’re getting this thing done.
  • [Gipsy starts dragging the body of one of the dead Kaiju towards the portal, suddenly the category 5 Kaiju appears in front of them]
  • Raleigh Becket: On my count, release the jets. Three, two, one… Now!
  • [Gipsy opens its jets and hurls itself at the Kaiju]
  • Raleigh Becket: Hold on!
  • [holding onto the Kaiju they jump into the portal]
  • Tendo Choi: Mako’s oxygen is down, half the barrel is thinning.
  • Herc Hansen: Can you reroute it?
  • Tendo Choi: I’m trying, sir.
  • Raleigh Becket: Hold on, Mako! I’m gonna burn this son of a bitch!
  • [Raleigh presses a button to eject fire from Gipsy which sets fire to the Kaiju, at the same time they enter through the breach]
  • Tendo Choi: That’s in. They’re in.
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: It worked.
  • Gipsy Danger AI: Oxygen remaining left hemisphere, critical levels. Operating at fifteen percent capacity. Ten percent capacity. Five percent capacity
  • [Mako is unconscious as her oxygen levels are low, so Raleigh starts transferring his oxygen tanks to her suit]
  • Tendo Choi: He’s giving her his oxygen.
  • Gipsy Danger AI: Right hemisphere oxygen. Critical level
  • Raleigh Becket: It’s okay now, Mako. I can finish this alone. All I have to do is fall. Anyone can fall.
  • [he touches her helmet for a moment]
  • Tendo Choi: Raleigh, you’re oxygen level’s critical now. You don’t have much time. Start the core meltdown and get out of there. Do you hear me? Get out of there now!
  • [Raleigh loads Mako into an escape pod and launches her out of the breach]
  • Tendo Choi: One pod is ejecting. No detonation, sir.
  • Raleigh Becket: Loccent, if you can still hear me, meltdown initiated. Reactor override, now!
  • Raleigh presses the trigger
  • Gipsy Danger AI: Manual activation required.
  • Herc Hansen: What’s going on?
  • Tendo Choi: Trigger’s offline. He has to do it by hand!
  • Dr. Newton Geiszler: He’s running out of time. He has to self-destruct now.
  • Gipsy Danger AI: Manual activation required.
  • [inside Gipsy, Raleigh manages to manually override the nuclear sequence by hand]
  • Raleigh Becket: Manual override ignition. Core meltdown in T minus sixty.
  • Gipsy Danger AI: Reactor meltdown fifty five seconds. Fifty seconds.
  • [Gipsy floats to a stop at the center of the Kaiju world, as the timer is counting down, Raleigh gets into a pod and his pod ejects out of Gipsy]
  • Gipsy Danger AI: Five, four, three, two, one. Reactor meltdown.
  • [Raleigh’s escape pod passes through the portal seconds before Gipsy’s nuclear core detonates destroying the breach]
  • Tendo Choi: Direct hit. The breach has collapsed!
  • [everyone in the command center cheers]
  • Herc Hansen: Get the choppers! Get the choppers now!
  • [pilots run to the helicopters to take off and rescue Raleigh and Mako]
  • [one of the escape pods surfaces in the ocean]
  • Tendo Choi: Visuals on first pod. Tracking solid, vital signs are good.
  • [Mako emerges from the pod]
  • Herc Hansen: Okay, where’s the second pod?
  • Tendo Choi: I’m tracking it, but I’m getting no vital signs.
  • [Mako stands in her pod looking around the ocean, suddenly Raleigh escape pod surfaces up, Mako jumps into the water and swims towards it, she climbs onto it and opens the pod to find Raleigh unconscious]
  • Mako Mori: I can’t find his pulse. I don’t think he’s breathing.
  • [to Tendo]
  • Herc Hansen: Can you read his pulse? Does he have a pulse?
  • Tendo Choi: I don’t know.
  • Mako Mori: Raleigh? Raleigh?
  • Tendo Choi: Mako, listen to me. I think it could be the sensors not working. We can’t be sure.
  • [Mako pulls Raleigh up and holds him in her arms as she cries]
  • Mako Mori: No. No. Don’t go.
  • Tendo Choi: Mako?
  • Mako Mori: Don’t go.
  • [Mako continues to cry as she holds on tightly to Raleigh]
  • Tendo Choi: Mako?
  • Raleigh Becket: I can’t breathe. You’re squeezing me too tight.
  • [suddenly Mako releases Raleigh]
  • Raleigh Becket: I couldn’t breathe.
  • [Mako starts laughing through her tears; back in the command center everyone cheers]
  • [last lines; Herc makes an announcement through the microphone to everyone in Shatterdome]
  • Herc Hansen: This is Marshall, Hercules Hansen. The breach is sealed. Stop the clock!
  • [everyone in Shatterdome cheers as the war clock is set back to zero; back on the ocean, Mako and Raleigh are still on the escape pod]
  • Tendo Choi: Mako, Raleigh, we have your position. The choppers are on their way. Just… just hang on. Are you okay?
  • [Mako and Raleigh look at each other and smile]
  • Tendo Choi: Do you copy?
  • [Mako and Raleigh touch their heads together intimately]
  • Tendo Choi: Uh…guys?
  • [at that moment the choppers fly above the two as they embrace]
  • [mid-credit scene; Chau cuts his way out of the newborn Kaiju’s stomach after having survived being eaten by it]
  • Hannibal Chau: Where’s my Goddamn shoe?!
