  • [first lines; Texas 1785 – everything is in black and white, we are at the front gate of the American traveling circus where the barker is trying to attract customers]
  • Front Gate Barker: Step this way, get your tickets now! Step this way! See the most wondrous sites imaginable, all from the four corners of the earth. Have the delight to thrill and to mystify! Walk through these gates and into a world of wonder!
  • [we go inside the traveling circus camp and see all the different acts and hear the next barker introducing their act]
  • Wild West Barker: She is here, ladies and gents. Live and in person, the gun slingin’, sharp shootin’ Annie Pie of the Wild West.
  • [we move along to Oz’s barker as he stands outside his tent and introduces Oz]
  • Frank: He has traveled the world and dazzled crowned princes of Europe! He will amaze, he will astound! The Great and Powerful Oz!
  • [inside Oz’s caravan, his assistant is getting ready for their next act]
  • May: I always knew that I was destined for show business. And now look at me, a magician’s assistant. To think an hour ago I was just selling oil cakes on the midway.
  • [as she looks at herself in the mirror she finds a hat nearby and puts it on]
  • Oz: Yes. Well, opportunity comes when you least expect it, my dear.
  • [Oz comes up from behind her wearing his magician outfit]
  • May: Wow. What a get up!
  • [referring to her hat]
  • Oz: You won’t need this.
  • May: Oh.
  • [he takes the hat off her head]
  • Oz: You are playing the simple country girl.
  • [he flaps his arm and produces a small box from under a large handkerchief]
  • Oz: A gift, in honor of your debut.
  • May: Oh!
  • [as May goes to grab the box, he pulls back slightly]
  • Oz: This belonged to my grandmother, Serena from Irkutsk. A decorated war hero.
  • May: Your grandmother?
  • Oz: Yes, she was killed in battle. Poor thing.
  • May: Which battle?
  • Oz: Which battle?
  • May: Mm-hmm.
  • Oz: There were so many. You’ve heard of the battle of Kerplach?
  • May: No.
  • Oz: No? Good. That’s where she died.
  • May: Oh.
  • Oz: And this music box was the only thing to survive.
  • [he opens the box and the music starts playing]
  • Oz: But I know that Grammy would want you to have it.
  • [just as they’re about to kiss, Oz’s assistant bursts into the caravan interrupting them]
  • [as Frank interrupts Oz and May kissing as he bursts into the caravan]
  • Frank: Professor…
  • Oz: Frank, the sock is on door! We’re rehearsing! How many times do I have to tell you to knock? Knock!
  • [Frank turns and leaves, closing the door behind him, Oz continues his seduction of May, opens the music box and leans in to kiss May, as they’re about to kiss there’s a knock on the door, Frank opens the door and Oz gives him a cold look]
  • Frank: I knocked.
  • Oz: What is it?
  • Frank: Showtime.
  • Oz: Why didn’t you say something?!
  • Frank: Only a half a house. Here’s the take.
  • [Frank empties the coins onto the table]
  • Oz: Pitiful.
  • [Oz starts counting the coins and separates out Frank’s cut, which is just two coins]
  • Oz: Alright, here’s your cut.
  • [Oz then looks at May]
  • Oz: For you, the applause will be approbation enough.
  • [May looks pleased, Frank looks at Oz holding out his hand with the two coins Oz gave him]
  • Oz: Well, how do you think I feel? Man of my talents, I should be playing the Orpheum Circuit instead of some dusty Podunk! My second hand jacket falling apart at the seams!
  • [Oz puts on the jacket that Frank is holding out for him]
  • Oz: You’re gonna have to patch this again.
  • Frank: What, again?
  • Oz: Yeah.
  • [Frank grabs Oz’s hat]
  • Oz: Let’s go. Hat!
  • Frank: Hat!
  • [Frank throws the hat at Oz and Oz puts it on ready to leave]
  • [as May gets ready to get on stage with Oz]
  • Frank: You’re the new girl, huh?
  • May: Yes.
  • Frank: Good. We needed a new one, the last one left us. Poor thing, suffered from a broken heart…
  • [Oz quickly interrupts him]
  • Oz: Attack. Heart attack. But she’s resting comfortably now in Abilene, expected to make a full recovery.
  • [looking at Frank]
  • Oz: Perhaps you’d like to join her.
  • [Oz takes the hat May put on her head again]
  • Oz: Now, remember, when I ask for a volunteer…
  • May: I raise my hand!
  • [May laughs in excitement and Frank rolls his eyes]
  • Oz: You are over qualified for this job, my dear.
  • [Oz opens the door and May walks out, Oz looks back at the camera]
  • Oz: Let’s go and make some magic.
  • [Oz winks, puts his hat on and walks out]
  • [outside Oz’s tent the barker addresses the crowds passing by]
  • Oz’s Tent Barker: Ladies and Gentlemen, this show has already begun. There are still a few seats left. Don’t miss your chance to see Oz the Great and Powerful!
  • [inside the tent Oz is on stage doing his show, he’s wearing a quasi-oriental robe and turban]
  • Oz: Journey with me now across those deserts to the mystical lands of the Arabian Peninsula!
  • [a couple of people in the audience clap]
  • Oz: For five thousand years, the lonely spirit has been trapped. But tonight we will attempt to free her. I shall require a volunteer from the audience.
  • [no one puts their hand up]
  • Oz: Anyone?
  • [some of the audience puts their hand up but Oz doesn’t see May’s hand]
  • Oz: Anyone?
  • [Oz sees May sitting in the audience, but May looks oblivious and instead looks around her to see who puts up their hand, Oz looks at Frank at the side of the stage and Frank slaps his hand to his forehead in frustration, Oz finally points at May]
  • Oz: How about you, Madam?
  • [suddenly May realizes what she’s was supposed to do and raises her hand]
  • May: Oh! Yes, I would like to volunteer.
  • [Oz does a fake laugh]
  • Oz: How kind of you. Please.
  • [May makes her way to the stage, as Oz takes her hand to guide her, he whispers to her]
  • Oz: Just remember what I told you.
  • [pointing to May on the stage]
  • Oz: A small country girl, ladies and gentlemen.
  • [the audience claps for her, Oz looks at May]
  • Oz: Now, you have nothing to fear just so long as you believe. For when you do believe, anything is possible.
  • [a young girl in a wheelchair in the front row watches in awe; backstage, Frank starts playing the atmospheric music as Oz pretends to hypnotize May]
  • Oz: You are growing sleepy, you’re eyelids become heavy. Sleep!
  • [May pretends to be in a deep sleep, the audience looks on with awe]
  • Oz: Come, Fernanda!
  • [backstage, Frank produces all of the practical effects for the show and sets off the pyrotechnics]
  • Oz: Allow yourself to merge with this woman before me!
  • [Oz puts hand on May and leans her body half way down, the audience looks amazed]
  • Oz: Can you hear me, oh, Queen Fernanda?
  • [May quietly croaks out]
  • May: Yes.
  • Oz: Then rise. Rise!
  • [Oz makes May’s body appear as though it’s floating in mid-air]
  • Oz: I command you to rise!
  • [backstage, Frank continues doing the effects and atmospheric music, onstage, Oz places a sheet to cover May’s body from head to foot]
  • [Oz continues his show, floating attempting to make May’s floating body rise]
  • Oz: Rise from your tomb! Rise as your spirit…
  • [suddenly someone from the audience shouts]
  • Skeptic in Audience #1: I see a wire!
  • Oz: You are mistaken, sir.
  • Skeptic in Audience #1: I am not! There is a wire! There is a wire holding her up!
  • [someone else from the audience shouts out]
  • Skeptic in Audience #2: A wire, I see it too! It’s right there!
  • [Oz looks to see what he’s referring to]
  • Skeptic in Audience #2: Clear as day, can’t you see it?
  • [Oz sees the wires and acts amazed]
  • Oz: A wire!
  • [Oz looks to the audience]
  • Oz: What need have I of wires? Frank!
  • [Frank tosses him a scimitar, Oz catches it and cuts the visible wires then Oz makes May’s body rise and whisks the sheet off of May’s body revealing empty air, the audience gasps in amazement and claps and Oz bows his head]
  • [as the audience is clapping Oz on stage, suddenly the girl in the wheelchair yells out]

Girl in Wheelchair: Make me walk!

  • [the audience goes silent]
  • Oz: What’s that?
  • Girl in Wheelchair: Make me walk.
  • [not knowing what to do at this unscripted outburst, Oz blurts out]
  • Oz: Not know, kid. Let us leave the wonders…
  • Girl in Wheelchair: But…but I believe in you.
  • Girl in Wheelchair’s Mother: Look, it’s not much, but it’s all that we have.
  • [she extends her hand towards Oz]
  • Girl in Wheelchair’s Father: Whatever you could do.
  • [Oz hesitates and looks at the girl]
  • Oz: I…I would make you, it’s just…it’s just that…
  • Disgruntled Kansas Man #1: Well, go on then! Make the girl walk.
  • Disgruntled Kansas Man #2: Make the kid walk!
  • [the rest of the audience pipes in telling him to make her walk, finally Oz confronts them]
  • Oz: I…I would make her walk, of course, but unfortunately there is a distemper in the ethers tonight.
  • Disgruntled Kansas Man #2: Make the kid walk! You big phony!
  • Disgruntled Kansas Man #1: You see! You see!
  • Oz: I’m sorry! I’m sorry!
  • [the crowd turns on him and start throwing stuff at him]
  • Oz: Thank you! Thank you! Oz the Great and Powerful.
  • [Oz quickly bows and Frank brings down the curtains]
  • [Oz storms out of the tent after the show had ended, around them the circus crew are hurriedly packing up the traveling circus as gray clouds swirl above them]
  • Oz: Why didn’t you close the damn curtains sooner?! I was dyin’ out there!
  • Frank: There was nothing you could have done. I didn’t really think it was that bad.
  • Oz: Of course not! You’re just a trained monkey!
  • [Frank looks upset at this comment as Oz walks on ahead, then they enter Oz’s caravan]
  • Frank: You know, you shouldn’t be so mean to me all the time, Professor. After all, I’m the only friend you got.
  • Oz: Friend? You’re not my friend, Frank. I don’t need a friend. What I need is someone who knows when to close damn curtain.
  • [they hear a knock at the door, Frank looks out the window to see who it is]
  • Frank: It’s a woman.
  • Oz: Ah, finally some good news.
  • Frank: You want me to wind up a music box?
  • [Oz look out through the window and sees a blond woman waiting]
  • Oz: No. Not for this one, Frank.
  • [Oz opens the door, the woman turns and smiles at Oz]
  • Oz: Hey, Annie.
  • [Annie walks in and embraces Oz, Frank leaves and closes the door]
  • Annie: Hello, Oscar.
  • Oz: You look lovely.
  • Annie: Thank you.
  • Annie: That was a wonderful show.
  • Oz: Oh, don’t tell me you watched that debacle?
  • Annie: I don’t why you didn’t just that poor girl the truth.
  • Oz: What truth? That I’m a fake? They would have had my head, and worse, they would’ve demanded a refund. Come on, have a seat. I’ll get you some tea.
  • [Annie takes a seat]
  • Oz: It’s been a long time, I haven’t seen you since…
  • Annie: The last time you rolled into town?
  • [Oz smiles at her as he gets her some tea]
  • Annie: It’s not often enough, Oscar, seeing you once every few months.
  • Oz: Well, it is a traveling circus.
  • [Oz gives her the tea and takes a seat opposite her]
  • Oz: How’s everything on the farm? How’s your Ma? She didn’t send me a pie this time, I hope she’s not mad. I meant to write.
  • Annie: I need to tell you something, Oscar.
  • Oz: That’s never a good start to a conversation.
  • Annie: John Gale asked me to marry him, that’s why I’ve come. Thought you should know.
  • [Oz looks at her quietly for a moment]
  • Oz: Uh-huh. Well, I…think that’s…that’s wonderful, Annie.
  • Annie: I said I had to think about it.
  • Oz: Well, men love that answer.
  • Annie: I wondered what you thought I should do.
  • Oz: Um…you could do a lot worse that John Gale, he’s a good man.
  • [Oz rises, turns from her and glues one of the fallen pictures on his moving picture box]
  • Annie: So are you.
  • Oz: No, I’m not. I’m many things, but a good man is not one of them.
  • Annie: But you could be, if you wanted to.
  • Oz: Well, that’s just it. I don’t want to. See Kansas is full of good men, church going men that get married and raise families, men like John Gale. Men like my father, who spent his whole life cleaning the dirt, just to die face down in it. I don’t want that, Annie. I don’t wanna be a good man, I wanna be great one. I wanna be Harry Houdini and Thomas Edison all rolled into one.
  • [Oz turns on the moving pictures box]
  • Annie: That’s all I ever wanted for you, you know?
  • [Oz turns to look at Annie]
  • Annie: Greatness.
  • Oz: Then you understand.
  • Annie: I do. Do you?
  • [suddenly Frank opens the door]
  • Frank: Uh…Professor, you need to look outside.
  • [Frank closes the door]
  • [Oz moves to look out the window, he sees another brunette pleading with her husband, Strongman]
  • Strong Man’s Wife: No, Bud, please! It was his grandmother’s!
  • [Strongman pushes her away]
  • Strongman: I’m gonna rip him in half!
  • [he crushes the music box Oz had given her in one hand and throws it to the ground]
  • Strong Man’s Wife: No, please! It was just his grandmother’s music box, it meant nothing!
  • [we see May is standing near them and looks down at the identical music box Oz had given her and realizes that Oz had played her, inside the caravan Oz turns to Annie]
  • Oz: I have to go. Congratulations on the engagement.
  • Annie: Oscar.
  • Oz: I’ll see you in my dreams.
  • [Oz kisses her and at that same moment Strongman breaks open the door and bursts in]
  • Strongman: I’m gonna rip your head off!
  • [Oz moves back and grabs a large sheet]
  • Oz: Zim-zala-bim!
  • [he swirls the sheet around and throws it onto himself and he disappears from under it, Strongman pulls the sheet off the floor and sees the massive hole cut into the bottom of the caravan that Oz had used to escape making him yell out in anger]
  • [as Oz is making his escape from Strongman, one of the circus clowns spots him]
  • Clown: There he is!
  • Oz: Woh!
  • Clown: He’s out here!
  • [Oz makes a run for it as Strongman chases after him]
  • Strongman: I’m gonna crush you up! I’m gonna crush you up!
  • [as Oz is running away, he passes the circus owner]
  • Oz, where are you going?
  • Oz: I’ll catch up with you in Milwaukee!
  • [Oz jumps onto the rope holding a large hot-air balloon]
  • Circus Owner: Half of that balloon is mine!
  • Oz: The other half is mine!
  • [Oz climbs the rope and gets into the balloon basket, Oz smiles to himself thinking he’s got away, but Strongman grabs hold of the rope holding the balloon and pulls it down]
  • Strongman: Oz!
  • [as Strongman is pulling the rope holding the balloon down, Oz gets his pocket knife and starts cutting through the rope, as Strongman is about to grab hold of him, Oz manages to cut the rope and the balloon rises up, Oz laughs as the balloon starts floating off]
  • Oz: So long, sucker!
  • Strongman: Get back here!
  • [as the balloon is floating off, Frank runs after him, holding Oz’s hat and magician’s bag]
  • Frank: Oz! Oz, you’re gonna need these!
  • Oz: Throw it! Now!
  • [Frank throws the bag and Oz catches it]
  • Oz: Hat!
  • [Oz catches the hat and sees Strongman still chasing after him]
  • Strongman: You’re a dead man!
  • [Oz waves his hat mockingly at Strongman]
  • Oz: Farewell! Au revoir! Al vida zein!
  • [as Oz looks down at the circus crew, he sees them all running away, then he looks up and sees that a massive tornado is coming towards him]
  • Oz: No! No, no, no, no!
  • [Oz’s balloon gets sucked into the tornado]
  • [as the tornado is destroying the balloon and Oz being nearly impaled a dozen times, Oz sits in the balloon basket and yells out]
  • Oz: Please! I don’t wanna die! I haven’t accomplished anything yet! Get me out of here and I’ll do great things! Please! Give me a chance! I promise! I promise, I can change!
  • [suddenly the tornado stops and everything around Oz starts floating up and around him, as if there’s no gravity, then a large organ crashes into his balloon, sending him back into the tornado where Oz finally wakes up and finds himself in the colorful World of Oz]
  • Oz: Thank you! Thank you!
  • [as the balloon floats around the beautiful surrounding it runs out of steam and descends and crashes into a river, the water finally takes it to a forest filled with giant plants, as the balloon floats through the river in the forest it starts to sink making Oz yells out]
  • Oz: I can’t swim! I can’t swim!
  • [when the balloon sinks, Oz falls into the water and he starts flapping his arms around yelling out for help]
  • Oz: Somebody help me!
  • [Oz stops flapping around and yelling when he realized the water is shallow, he stands and retrieves his hat]
  • [as Oz stand in the forest water looking around him, he hears a strange noise, looks ahead and sees a woman, Theodora, coming towards him through the large plants]
  • Oz: Thank goodness! I…I thought I was dead! Unless you’re an angel. Am I in heaven?
  • [Theodora shakes her head and Oz laughs and looks up at the sky and yells out]
  • Oz: Oh! There’s still hope for me! You won’t regret this!
  • Theodora: I saw you fall from the sky.
  • Oz: Oh. Yes. Uh…my balloon hit a, uh…inverted thermo. I…I couldn’t compensate it.
  • [Oz finds his bag in the water and retrieves it]
  • Theodora: I’d get out of the water if I were you.
  • Oz: Oh, it’s actually quite nice.
  • Theodora: I’d be more concerned with the river fairies, their teeth are small, but very sharp.
  • Oz: Uh…river fairies? What’s a river fairy?
  • [suddenly the river fairies attack Oz’s legs, biting him]
  • Oz: Ow! Get off! Ah! Ow!
  • [Oz quickly gets out of the water, one of the fairies floats towards Oz and starts singing a tune, to which Oz whistles the same tune, but the fairy suddenly squirts water in his face and flies off]
  • Theodora: Spiteful little things, aren’t they?
  • [Oz turns and smiles at her]
  • [Oz walks towards Theodora]
  • Oz: Where…where am I exactly?
  • Theodora: Where do you think you are?
  • Oz: I have no idea. It’s like no place I’ve ever seen.
  • Theodora: You’re in Oz.
  • Oz? That’s my name. Oscar Zoroaster Phadrig Isaac Norman Henkle Emmanuel Ambrose Diggs.
  • [Oz takes his hat off]
  • Oz: But everyone calls me Oz.
  • [Oz does one of his cheap magic tricks and produces a bunch of flowers to present to Theodora]
  • Theodora: I knew it! Oh, the King’s prophecy was true! He said that a great wizard bearing the name of our land would descend from the heavens and save us all, and here you are. Here to claim your throne.
  • [Oz looks bewildered]
  • Oz: To claim a throne? You mean, like a king’s throne?
  • Theodora: Well, yes. Because you will be our king.
  • Oz: Your king?
  • [Theodora nods her head]
  • Oz: Like in a palace with a crown and a scepter?
  • Theodora: Yes, a beautiful scepter and a grand palace. And you will save all the people.
  • Oz: Is that a gold scepter?
  • Theodora: Yes. There’s more gold than you could ever imagine. And Oz will now be what it once was. Because you are the wizard, aren’t you?
  • [on hearing about all the gold, Oz quickly takes up this opportunity]
  • Oz: Yes. I am the wizard.
  • [after Oz confirm to Theodora that he’s the prophesied wizard, they hear an awful loud mysterious growling echoes around the forest]
  • Oz: What…what was that?
  • Theodora: The Wicked Witch’s minions. They’ve been sent here to kill you.
  • Oz: Me? A wicked witch?
  • [they hear the loud noise again]
  • Theodora: You better hurry, or your reign will be over before it’s begun!
  • [Theodora quickly turns to leave and Oz follows her, they make a run for it and Oz spots an alcove under a small waterfall]
  • Oz: In there! Give me your leg!
  • [Oz helps Theodora into the alcove and climbs in himself, they hear the witch’s minions outside as they fly away]
  • Theodora: Perhaps the Wicked Witch is sending them back.
  • Oz: I don’t think I like witches.
  • [Theodora laughs]
  • Oz: What?
  • Theodora: I…I too am a witch. I’m Theodora the Good.
  • [Oz laughs, not believing her]
  • Oz: You’re not a witch.
  • Theodora: Of course I am.
  • Oz: Where are all your warts? Where’s your broom?
  • Theodora: What would I do with a broom?
  • Oz: Fly.
  • Theodora: With a broom?
  • Oz: Never mind.
  • [suddenly they hear one of the witch’s minions outside their cave, Oz holds Theodora’s mouth to stop her from screaming, then takes off his hat, takes out a white dove and releases it, the minion immediately flies off to follow the bird]
  • [as Oz helps Theodora out of the cave, she holds onto him]
  • Oz: You were afraid?
  • Theodora: Yes, that something might happen to you.
  • [Theodora looks at Oz, believing that he genuinely cares for her]
  • [later that night, they set up camp and sit around a fire]
  • Oz: So, this Wicked Witch, just how wicked is she?
  • Theodora: She’s as wicked as they come, she poisoned her own father.
  • Oz: Pretty wicked.
  • Theodora: He was the king and wizard like you, but she wanted the thrown all to herself. Poor man. But my sister chased her away from The Emerald City. I can’t wait for her to meet you. She was starting to doubt you’d ever come, but now she’ll see, and you’re going to fix everything.
  • Oz: Yeah.
  • [Theodora takes her jacket and hat off, then let’s her hair down, Oz watches her and is struck by her beauty]
  • Oz: You know what I think we need?
  • [he rises, takes out a large red handkerchief, waves it and brings out one of his music box’s]
  • Oz: A little music.
  • Theodora: Is that magic?
  • Oz: In a way. It’s a music box.
  • [he kneels in front of her holding out the music box]
  • Oz: You’ve never seen one? Well this belonged to my grandmother, Serena from Irkutsk.
  • [he opens the box which starts playing its music]
  • Oz: Go on, I want you to have it.
  • [Theodora hesitates as she looks at the music box in his hands]
  • Theodora: No one’s ever given me anything just because they wanted to.
  • Oz: Pretty girl like you? A visage of Helen of Troy no less, I’m sure you have dozens of admirers.
  • Theodora: You don’t know much about witches, do you?
  • Oz: Maybe not, but I’m told I’m a fast learner.
  • Oz: May I have this dance, my lady?
  • [Theodora’s looks at him]
  • Oz: Now you’re gonna tell me no one’s ever asked you to dance before.
  • Theodora: No one ever has.
  • Oz: Then it’s high time that you learned.
  • [Oz extends his hand, Theodora smiles and takes it, Oz then shows her how to dance]
  • Oz: Now you put your hand here.
  • [she puts her hand in one his hands]
  • Oz: And your other hand here.
  • [he places her hand on his shoulder, Oz then starts moving them to the music]
  • Oz: Nice, isn’t it?
  • Theodora: Yes.
  • [as they continue to dance, Oz kisses Theodora]
  • [the next day, Theodora guides them to The Emerald City]
  • Theodora: I’ve cried for so long. I live a lonely life, then you showed up. Not only are you the wizard, but you’re the person I belong with.
  • [Oz smiles at her uncomfortably]
  • Oz: Well, we sure get along, and uh…
  • Theodora: And?
  • Oz: And, like you said, we belong together.
  • Theodora: Oh, I was hoping you would say that.
  • [as they walk along they hear a voice calling out]
  • Finley: Help me! Somebody save me!
  • [they see a winged small monkey tangled in the roots of a giant plant]
  • Theodora: That poor little creature. Wizard, we must save him.
  • [Oz and Theodora watch as the monkey struggles to free itself from the roots of the plant]
  • Finley: Help me! Please! Save me! Somebody help me! Oh, no, no, no, no!
  • [Oz turns to Theodora]
  • Oz: Allow the wizard.
  • Finley: Help me! Come on! Somebody help me!
  • [Oz starts walking towards the monkey]
  • Oz: Of course I’ll save this little talking monkey in a bellhop’s uniform.
  • [the monkey spots Oz walking towards him]
  • Finley: You! Mister, please hurry up! Do you have anything sharp, like a knife or something? How about your teeth? What kind of teeth you got?
  • [Oz eager to impress Theodora, looks towards her as he answers the monkey]
  • Oz: Calm down.
  • Finley: Come on, hurry!
  • Oz: It’s gonna be alright.
  • Finley: You gotta get me out of these vines!
  • Oz: Calm down.
  • [Oz kneels in front of the monkey, takes out his pocket knife and tries to grab hold of one of the plant roots]
  • Finley: I’m gonna die! It’s gonna eat me!
  • Oz: Don’t worry.
  • Finley: Hurry!
  • Oz: The vines aren’t gonna eat you.
  • Finley: Not the vine! The Baron!
  • [he points to something behind Oz and Oz hears a lion’s growl]
  • Oz: Baron?!
  • [suddenly we see a massive holy roman empire, standing on a rock behind Oz, it roars loudly]
  • Finley: We’re gonna die! We’re gonna die!
  • [Oz looks round and yells in terror]
  • Oz: Aahh!
  • [the german jumps towards them]
  • Finley: Eat him first! Eat him first!
  • [as the german is about to attack them, Oz reaches into his jacket pocket and tosses a handful of red powder to the ground, thick red smoke explodes from the ground and frightens the german away]
  • [after the lion has run off, Oz plays it out in front of Theodora]
  • Oz: Zim-zala-bim! Gone, coward! Fear my greatness!
  • Theodora: You were wonderful, Wizard.
  • Finley: Wizard? You mean the prophecy was true?
  • [Finley uses his wings to float up towards Oz and Theodora]
  • Theodora: Indeed.
  • Oz: Alright. Well, saved the day. It was nothing, just a little prestidigitation display.
  • Theodora: Oh.
  • Oz: Show me to the palace.
  • Theodora: Yes.
  • [turning to Finley]
  • Oz: Good day, sir.
  • Finley: Well, wait! Please!
  • [as Oz and Theodora start walking off and Finley stops them]
  • Finley: Sir, my name is Finley. My master’s home was ransacked by the Wicked Witch’s baboons and I’ve been hiding in these woods ever since. But now you’ve saved my life, oh Wizard. So I hereby swear a life debt to you.
  • Oz: No need.
  • Finley: From this moment on, I shall be your loyal and faithful servant, until death.
  • [to Oz]
  • Theodora: Well, he is cute.
  • [Finley smiles sweetly]
  • Oz: Alright, you’re hired.
  • Finley: Wonderful! Let’s shake on it.
  • [Finley extends his hand towards Oz]
  • Oz: My bag, monkey.
  • [Oz holds out his bag]
  • Finley: Surely. You must travel light.
  • [Finley takes Oz’s bag and is immediately weighted down due to the heaviness of the bag, Oz and Theodora start walking off]
  • Finley: Got it. You two run along.
  • [as they walk along in the woods, Theodora spots The Emerald City ahead, and they stop to look at it]
  • Theodora: The Emerald City. Just down this hill, along the Yellow Brick Road. It’ll all be yours now.
  • Oz: It’s a good thing green is my favorite color.
  • [this makes Theodora laugh]
  • Theodora: Oh, you are gonna make the best king that Oz has ever known.
  • Oz: Thank you.
  • Theodora: And I would be so proud to be your queen.
  • [she bows hear head]
  • Oz: My queen?
  • Theodora: We’ll spend a lifetime together, but right now there’s thousands of people in Oz waiting to witness your miracles.
  • [she smiles and gives a quick kiss before walk ahead, Oz watches her walk off, looking worried]
  • Oz: Thousands. It’s a big show.
  • [Finley finally catches up, dragging Oz’s heavy bag on the ground, he stops and wipes his forehead]
  • Finley: Wooh! What now, Wizard?
  • Oz: Monkey, tell me again about that life debt.
  • Finley: I devote my life to you. Whatever you wish, whatever you want, it is my sworn duty to deliver frequently till the end of my days.
  • Oz: Mm-hmm. And there’s no getting out of it?
  • Finley: None, sir. It is irrevocable.
  • Oz: Good, cause I’m not the Wizard.
  • [thinking Oz is joking, Finley laughs]
  • Finley: Oh, sir. You’re sense of humor is as boundless as it is wondrous. You remind me…
  • Oz: Monkey, I’m not the Wizard.
  • [Finley floats up to look at Oz]
  • Finley: Well, you could have told me before I sealed the life debt.
  • Oz: It’s too late.
  • [pointing to Theodora]
  • Finley: You gotta come clean to that innocent young girl.
  • Oz: I’ll deal with her later. As my new assistant, all you need to know are the three ups. Show up, keep up, shut up.
  • Finley: Uh…
  • [Oz points at him to stop him from saying anything further]
  • Oz: What’s the third up?
  • [Finley recounts the Oz’s ups to himself and looks at Oz saying nothing]
  • Oz: Right. Now listen, I’m depending on you. We need to convince the people of Oz that they found their Wizard.
  • [along the Yellow Brick Road they reach Theodora’s carriage which is accompanied by soldiers and their leader]
  • Theodora: Hello, Knuck.
  • Knuck: Theodora, we’ve been expecting you. I shall blow a fanfare.
  • [Knuck starts blowing on his trumpet]
  • Theodora: No, no, no! No! Not now! This is the Wizard.
  • [Oz walks up towards them]
  • Oz: How do you do, sir?
  • [Oz holds out his hand towards Knuck]
  • Knuck: This is the Wizard?!
  • Oz: Is there a problem?
  • [Knuck looks Oz up and down with suspicion]
  • Knuck: Yeah.
  • [at that moment Kunck’s soldier’s march and stop beside them]
  • Knuck: All hail the Wizard.
  • The Soldiers: All hail the Wizard!
  • Finley: All hail the Wizard! The mighties of mighties! The greatest, most powerful and most genuine of real and true wizards.
  • Oz: Thank you.
  • [as Finley continues, Oz starts to look uncomfortable]
  • Finley: A wizard above scrutiny, with no covert agenda or subversive intention whatsoever. A wizard of the highest moral rectitude. He’s just a real good solid wizard, everyone. The Wizard, here he is!
  • [Oz nods his head and everyone is silent, Finley look at Oz]
  • Finley: How’d I do?
  • [we then cut to Oz and Theodora sitting in the carriage as they ride down the road guided by the Knuck and his soldier]
  • Finley: Hello? Oz! Can I get in the carriage? Can I please get in the carriage?
  • [Finley is ignored as they continue on towards The Emerald City]
  • [as Knuck opens the entrance to The Emerald City]
  • Knuck: I shall blow a fanfare.
  • Theodora: Not now.
  • Oz: Is that it? Is that my throne?
  • [as they approach the king’s throne]
  • Evanora: Do you like it?
  • [they look up and see Evanora standing in the shadows above the throne]
  • Evanora: I do so hope you like it, because I’ve been personally watching over it, awaiting your arrival.
  • [Evanora comes out of the shadows and looks down at them]
  • Oz: Oh, much obliged.
  • [Evanora starts walking down the long staircase towards Oz and Theodora]
  • Evanora: Oh, praise be. You are here at last, and the prophecy shall be fulfilled. Oh, this is a glorious day for us all. And may I add, you’re as handsome a king as we’ve ever had.
  • [Oz laughs charmingly]
  • Oz: Flatterer. Who is this fetching woman?
  • [Oz takes Evanora’s hand and kisses it]
  • Theodora: This is my sister.
  • Evanora: I’m Evanora, the royal adviser. I have been protecting The Emerald City whilst we awaited your arrival. I’m here to serve you, as I served the king before you.
  • [she bows her head]
  • Oz: Well, I look forward to being served.
  • [Oz smiles and walks towards the throne]
  • Evanora: Sister, I like him already.
  • [as Oz approaches the throne he notices the scepter beside it]
  • Oz: Ah, my scepter.
  • [Oz takes the scepter and sits in the throne]
  • Evanora: Oh, yes. Go on then, have a seat. How does it feel?
  • [Oz sprawls his legs on the arms of the throne and plays with the scepter]
  • Oz: Fits like a glove.
  • Evanora: Thank goodness. Knuck will show you to your chambers and then we can uh…
  • [says more quietly]
  • Evanora: We can chat more later.
  • Oz: Can’t wait.
  • [Oz rises from the throne and walks off to follow Knuck]
  • Oz: Monkey, my bag.
  • [Finley mockingly salutes Oz]
  • Finley: Yes, Wizard. Right away, oh great and powerful one.
  • [Finley picks up Oz’s heavy bag and follows him, Knuck climbs up on the long door handle to open it]
  • Oz: Thank you, sour puss.
  • [Oz walks through the door]
  • Knuck: My name is Knuck!
  • [Knuck follows them out and closes the door behind him]
  • [after Oz leaves the room]
  • Theodora: Isn’t he wonderful? Didn’t I say he would come.
  • Evanora: You dare escort that oaf in here and…and allow climb on the hallowed throne!
  • Theodora: And why not! He is The Wizard.
  • Evanora: The Wizard! Or so he says. I mean, did it not occur to you that he might be an impostor in league with The Wicked Witch and sent here to kill us?
  • Theodora: Wicked Witch? Don’t be ridiculous.
  • Evanora: Oh, I’m not the one who’s underestimating her cleverness.
  • [Evanora turns and walks a little ahead before turning back to face Theodora]
  • Evanora: Or maybe it is you I’m underestimating. Have you finally joined her side, sister?
  • Theodora: I am on no one’s side, you know that. I simply want peace, that’s all I ever wanted and The Wizard can do that. He’s a good man.
  • Evanora: Oh, what do you know about goodness? Deep down you are wicked.
  • Theodora: I am not wicked!
  • [Theodora loses her temper and from her hand a fireball shoots out, breaking a large vase nearby]
  • Evanora: That temper really is wasted on you.
  • Theodora: Do you honestly think that I could conspire against you with her? You are my sister and I love you.
  • [Evanora gently takes Theodora’s hand]
  • Evanora: You’re right. But I do need proof that he is who he claims to be.
  • Theodora: But he has already proven himself.
  • Evanora: Not to me he hasn’t.
  • [later that night as Evanora shows Oz around The Emerald City]
  • Oz: Thank you for the tour.
  • Evanora: It’s my job.
  • Oz: Giving tours?
  • Evanora: Taking care of the king.
  • Oz: Of course. And on that note I was thinking it might be nice to have a royal feast, a grand roast…
  • Evanora: My sister has been telling me that your magic is really quite powerful.
  • Oz: Really? Yes, uh…babbling to the minds of all who witness it.
  • Evanora: Oh, I do wish I could see it for myself.
  • Oz: Yes.
  • Evanora: Why not show me now?
  • Oz: Now?
  • Evanora: Yeah.
  • Oz: All things in good time, and in good time for all things.
  • [Oz laughs charmingly]
  • Oz: So wise, so true.
  • [Evanora turns and starts walking ahead]
  • Evanora: Well, um…there is one last room that I would like you to see.
  • [she approaches a door and turns to Oz before opening it]
  • Evanora: The Royal Treasure of Oz.
  • [she opens the door and they enter a massive chamber overflowing with gold and riches]
  • Evanora: It belongs to whoever is king.
  • [Oz looks amazed and speechless by all the gold]
  • Evanora: It’s alright, Wizard. Go and enjoy your riches.
  • [Oz drops down on the massive pile of gold coins and laughs]
  • Oz: It’s mine!
  • [he starts throwing the gold coins around]
  • Oz: It’s mine! Oh, no more second hand goods for you, baby! Nothing but silk and satins! Ali Baba!
  • [Oz drops himself on all the gold again, rolling around in it]
  • [as he rolls in the gold he finds a gold chalice and holds it up]
  • Oz: Oh, and one of these things! What is this?
  • Evanora: A chalice.
  • Oz: A chalice! I’ve always wanted a chalice, now I’ve got one.
  • [he kisses the chalice]
  • Evanora: Well, um…not quite yet. You see, you only become the king after you defeat The Wicked Witch, that’s the prophecy. And since you haven’t done that yet, you’re not…
  • Oz: I’m not actually the king.
  • Evanora: Not yet, no. You still have to get rid of The Wicked Witch.
  • Oz: Right.
  • [Oz throws the chalice aside and starts walking off]
  • Evanora: And killing her won’t be easy.
  • Oz: No, I don’t suppose it will be.
  • Evanora: Mm.
  • [Oz stops and faces Evanora]
  • Oz: Wait a minute. No one said anything about killing anybody.
  • Evanora: Oh. Well, if you’re not interested in being king, that’s alright with me.
  • [Evanora turns and starts walking away]
  • Evanora: We can just forget about the whole thing, the gold and the…the rubies, the chalice…
  • Oz: I’m interested! I…I’m just not too keen on killing a lady.
  • Evanora: She’s not a lady!
  • [Evanora turns and faces Oz, she starts walking back towards him]
  • Evanora: She’s a wicked witch, and your magic is the only thing strong enough to destroy her. All you have to do is journey to the Dark Forest and destroy her wand.
  • Oz: Her wand?
  • Evanora: Yes, it’s the source of all her power. Without it she dies.
  • Oz: I haven’t even said goodbye to Theodora. She will be upset.
  • Evanora: I will talk to her in the morning. I will tell her how much you love her, how much you…
  • Oz: No. Uh… No, don’t say anything.
  • Evanora: Alright. I will say whatever it is you want me to say, but are you going to save us all or not?
  • [Oz looks over at all the gold and treasure, he tosses one of the gold coins and catches it]
  • Oz: I’m your wizard.
  • [as Oz and Finley begin their journey to the Dark Forest]
  • Finley: You’re really gonna do this?
  • Oz: How hard could it be to kill a wicked witch?
  • Finley: Hard! Really hard! It’s very very hard to kill a wicked witch. And what about that poor girl back there? I think she really liked you.
  • Oz: She’ll get over me, they always do. She’s a pretty young witch, they’ll be plenty of wizards knocking at her door.
  • Finley: Oh, every lie you tell gets us one step closer to The Emerald City dungeon.
  • Oz: Then don’t think of them as lies. Think of them as stepping stones on the road to greatness.
  • Finley: I got it! We’ll turn around and go back. You’ll come clean, you apologize for lying about being a wizard and for lying to that poor girl, okay? You gotta really seem contrite, you gotta sell it. Maybe you could even cry. Can you cry? I could cut up and onion.
  • Oz: We’re not going back. We’re gonna find this wicked witch, steal her wand. I’ll get that big pile of gold and you can have a nice pile of bananas, alright?
  • Finley: Bananas!
  • [Finley stops and drops Oz’s bag]
  • Finley: Oh, I see. Because I’m a monkey, I must love bananas, right? That is a vicious stereotype.
  • Oz: You don’t like bananas?
  • Finley: Of course I love bananas! I’m a monkey, don’t be ridiculous. I just don’t like you saying it. How about this? We offer to wash all the windows in The Emerald City for an entire year? They’d have to forgive us. Or we could give them a little help with their infrastructure. I noticed some…
  • [they continue on their journey on the Yellow Brick Road towards the Dark Forest]
  • [Oz and Finley stop as they notice smoke coming from the city ahead]
  • Finley: That looks bad.
  • Oz: We’re not going down there.
  • Finley: Someone might need our help. Not that you’d care.
  • [Finley starts walking towards the city]
  • Oz: Get back here! You get back here!
  • [Oz starts following Finley]
  • Oz: We’ve gotta get The Wicked Witch! What are we doing over here?!
  • [they enter the city, which looks like it’s made out of porcelain: porcelain houses which look like gigantic teapots, porcelain trees, and porcelain residents]
  • Oz: What happened here?
  • [all the houses are broken and have been set on fire]
  • [Oz stops and picks up a piece of broken china that looks like a face, Finley looks horrified, then they hear a girl crying, they walk up to the one of china houses and look inside]
  • Oz: Hello?
  • [Oz sees a tiny young porcelain girl behind a table]
  • Oz: Hey, there.
  • [China Girl quickly hides behind the table again]
  • Oz: You alright? Don’t worry, we’re not gonna hurt you. This is Finley.
  • Finley: Hi.
  • Oz: My name is Oz.
  • China Girl: Are you…are you The Wizard?
  • Oz: You’ve heard of me?
  • China Girl: Everyone has.
  • Oz: Good. Then you know there’s nothing to be afraid of. Just come on out of there.
  • China Girl: But I can’t.
  • Oz: Oh, alright. Hold on.
  • [Oz moves closer to China Girl]
  • Oz: Let’s get this off you.
  • [Oz removes the table and finds China Girl’s lets have been broken and separated from her body]
  • Oz: Oh, no.
  • [China Girl starts crying again]
  • China Girl: I’ll never get back together.
  • [after seeing China Girl’s broken legs, Oz thinks for a moment]
  • Oz: Don’t worry, I think I have something. [to Finley] Give me that bag. [Oz opens his bag and starts looking for something] I, uh…packed something. There it is!
  • [he pulls out a small bottle of glue]
  • China Girl: What is that?
  • Oz: Magic in a bottle.
  • China Girl: Magic?
  • Oz: Let’s give it a try. [Oz picks up one of the broken pieces of leg] Alright. Just give it a little dab. Like so. [he puts some glue on china leg and puts the leg back on China Girl] Okay, it should work. There we go. [the leg sticks on] Ta-dah! [as Oz sticks on one of China Girl’s legs they hear the Wicked Witch’s minions flying around outside]
  • China Girl: They’re coming back!
  • [they hear the minions flying away]
  • Oz: It’s okay. China Girl starts crying] They’re gone.
  • China Girl: The Wicked Witch sent them.
  • Oz: Why?
  • [Oz continues to use his glue to stick on China Girl’s other leg]
  • China Girl: Last night, the whole town was celebrating out in the streets, because we’d heard that you’d finally arrived.
  • Oz: Me?
  • China Girl: Everyone was so happy. But then…but then those things flew in, and then…and then they…
  • [China Girl breaks down with tears, Oz tries to sooth her by gluing on the rest of her leg]
  • Oz: Last piece. Would you like to try to stand? [China Girl nods, Oz helps her by holding her hands] There. Alright. There you go. Easy. [China Girl slowly rises to her feet and stands] I’m gonna let you go. [Oz lets go of her hands, China Girl stumbles but manages to hold herself up] Okay. Now walk to me.
  • China Girl: I don’t think I can.
  • Oz: I think you can. Come on. [China Girl slowly steps forward and manages to walk towards Oz] Alright!
  • China Girl: You did it! [China Girl jumps into Oz’s arms and Oz holds her gently] Thank you.
  • [Oz looks touched by this, he looks over to Finley who looks away as tears well up in his eyes]
  • [as they comes to a fork in the road, they see the signs for the Emerald City and the Dark Forest]
  • Oz: Dark Forest. Alright, this is it. [turning to China Girl] Just head on down that way for about two, three hours, you’ll hit The Emerald City. Tell ’em I sent you, they’ll take care of you. Nice meetin’ ya. [Oz turns to start walking off towards the Dark Forest]
  • China Girl: But…I wanna go with you.
  • Oz: What? [Oz walks back towards China Girl and kneels in front of her to face her] On a witch hunt? No, you’re just a little girl.
  • [this makes China girl angry]
  • China Girl: I’m not as delicate as I look!
  • [she walks over to Oz and kicks him]
  • Oz: That didn’t hurt.
  • China Girl: I’m coming with you!
  • Oz: Listen, we have one rule in show business; never work with kids or animals. I’m already workin’ with this thing. [he points to Finley and Finley growls at him] Relax.
  • [to China Girl]
  • Oz: That answer’s no. [as Oz refuses to take her with them on their journey, China Girl begins to cry] Oh, no. Don’t…don’t do that. You’re fine.
  • China Girl: You’re gonna leave me alone?
  • Oz: Look, you’re…you’re fine.
  • China Girl: On a road? In the middle of nowhere?
  • Oz: All you have to do is take the Yellow Brick Road, you’ll get there.
  • [China Girl continues to cry, Oz turns to Finley]
  • Oz: She’s crying again. What do I have to do?
  • [suddenly China Girl wails and runs towards Oz and leaps onto his leg]
  • Oz: Oh, no. Off! Come on! Off. Off with you!
  • China Girl: Please let me go!
  • Oz: Get off! No! Get off of there!
  • China Girl: I promise I won’t bother you!
  • Oz: No dolls on the witch hunt!
  • [Oz tries to get China Girl off his leg but she clings on continuing to cry]
  • China Girl: Please let me go!
  • Oz: Fine! Fine! You wanna come! Come! We’ll all go, it’ll be a big party!
  • [this makes China Girl let of Oz’s leg]
  • China Girl: Great! Let’s go kill her ourselves a witch!
  • [she starts humming and skipping ahead, Oz and Finley look at each before turning to watch her skipping ahead and they follow her towards the Dark Forest]
  • [as they reach the entrance to the Dark Forest, the crows on the trees start warning them]
  • Crows: You’ll die! You’ll die!
  • [the crows fly off]
  • Oz: Did those crows just say we’re gonna die?
  • Finley: They did.
  • China Girl: Wizard!
  • [Oz looks down at China Girl who looking scared holds out her arms to Oz and Oz picks her up and puts her on his shoulder, Oz looks over to Finley who also holds out his arms to Oz]
  • Oz: Come on!
  • [as they start walking into the Dark Forest, they feel the evil presence all around them]
  • China Girl: I’m scared. You think there are ghosts out here?
  • Oz: No, of course not.
  • China Girl: Evil spirits maybe? The undead.
  • Oz: The undead.
  • [to China Girl as Oz starts to look scared]
  • Oz: Will you stop that?
  • [behind them we see a number of glowing eyes in the dark following them, Oz turns to look back and all the glowing eyes disappear, then something grabs Finley which makes him jump into Oz]
  • Oz: Get off!
  • Finley: Something’s got my tail! Something’s got my tail!
  • Oz: Will you calm down!
  • [suddenly they are attacked by violent plants that try to impale them, the trio scream out in terror]
  • Oz: No! What is it?!
  • Finley: I wanna go home! I wanna go home!
  • [the plants continue to attack and try to impale them]
  • [the trio manage to get away from the violent plants and run deeper into the forest]
  • Finley: Hate the Dark Forest! Hate the Dark Forest!
  • China Girl: Oh, my gosh! That was close!
  • [they stop and to look ahead of them, they see a cemetery]
  • China Girl: Where are we?
  • Oz: This must be the place.
  • China Girl: So how are you gonna kill The Wicked Witch?
  • Oz: All I need to do is get her magic wand. Once I destroy that, she’s finished.
  • China Girl: Why don’t you just use this?
  • [China Girl draws out small knife]
  • Finley: It’s got a knife!
  • Oz: Where did you get that?
  • China Girl: I’m made of china, I gotta protect myself somehow.
  • [she starts swinging the knife around]
  • Oz: Give me that.
  • [Oz takes her knife and tosses it away]
  • China Girl: Hey!
  • Oz: Honestly!
  • China Girl: Honestly, yourself.
  • [they see a hooded figure entering the cemetery]
  • Finley: Look!
  • China Girl: That must be her!
  • [the trio hide as they watch the hooded figure put down the wand]
  • Oz: She put down the wand.
  • China Girl: But how are we gonna get it?
  • [Oz pulls Finley and China Girl down behind the rock]
  • China Girl: Hey!
  • Oz: Listen up, here’s the plan.
  • [he starts drawing on the dirt on the ground]
  • Oz: Wicked Witch; the triangle. Monkey, you’re the X. I’m the O. China Girl, you’re the squiggly line.
  • China Girl: I wanna be a heart. Can I be a heart?
  • Oz: Aright, fine. You’re a…you’re a heart.
  • [he draws the symbols in the dirt]
  • Oz: Okay. Now, heart stays here as O makes its way over here. X counters thusly.
  • [looking up at China Girl and Finley]
  • Oz: Clear so far?
  • [suddenly Finley sneezes into the dirt, messing up Oz’s drawing in the dirt]
  • China Girl: Bless you.
  • Oz: Good work. You just sneezed away the plan.
  • Finley: Sorry.
  • Oz: Never mind! Just go over there and make some weird animal noise, I’ll grab the wand when she’s not looking. Get out of here!
  • [Finley rushes off, Oz goes towards the hooded figure and China Girl watches from behind the rock]
  • [as Oz moves closer to the hooded figure, he quickly hides behind a tombstone, China Girl encourages him to move closer and whispers]
  • China Girl: Come on! Come on!
  • [Oz nods, as the hooded figure is opening the lock to the cemetery gates, Oz sneaks up and is about to take the wand when the hooded figure turns around]
  • China Girl: Oh, no!
  • [Oz quickly hides back down, when the hooded figure comes up close, it extends its hand and is about to take the wand when they hear Finley making a loud ‘mooing’ sound]
  • China Girl: A cow?
  • [the hooded figure turns to see where the noise is coming from and Oz quickly grabs the wand and runs off towards China Girl]
  • China Girl: Come on! Come on! Hurry!
  • [the trio meet up behind the rock again]
  • Oz: I got it!
  • Finley: Break it!
  • China Girl: Break it, Wizard! Break it!
  • [as Oz is about to break the wand when a voice interrupts them]
  • Glinda: Did you say Wizard?
  • [the trio scream as they see the hooded figure upon them]
  • Glinda: Are you really the Wizard?
  • Oz: Um…it’s a complicated question. I mean, what is a wizard? I…
  • [the hooded figure unveils herself, revealing a face identical to Annie from Kansas, Oz looks at her with surprise then gets up and walks up closer to her]
  • Oz: Yes. I’m the wizard.
  • Glinda: Then there’s hope.
  • [as they watch Oz and Glinda, China Girl whispers to Finley]
  • China Girl: What’s going on?
  • Finley: Not sure. I sneezed the plan away.
  • [they watch as Oz and Glinda continue to talk]
  • Glinda: I’ve waited so long to meet you.
  • Oz: So we’ve never met?
  • Glinda: Certainly not. I’d remember a thing like that.
  • Oz: And you’ve never been to Kansas?
  • Glinda: What is Kansas? Is that where you’re from? Oh, my. You must have traveled very far to get to the land of Oz.
  • Oz: Yeah, I did.
  • [to Glinda, offering her wand back]
  • Finley: Here’s your wand. Sorry I mooed.
  • [to Oz]
  • Finley: And to think, you almost killed Glinda for a bit of gold.
  • Oz: A bit? There are mountains of it, buddy.
  • [Glinda turns and faces Oz, giving him a cold look]
  • Oz: Not that I was going to…going to do it. I…I wasn’t really going to break your wand.
  • Glinda: Follow me.
  • [Glinda walks on ahead]
  • Oz: Okay.
  • [back in Emerald City Evanora watches, in her crystal ball, as her plans to kill Glinda have failed and Glinda is guiding Oz through the cemetery]
  • Evanora: No. No, no, no, no. It cannot be! I curse you, Glinda. You shall be dead, I’ll see you dead yet. I curse you and your pretty little face!
  • [Theodora enters the room]
  • Theodora: Sister! Sister, the Wizard is missing. I’ve looked everywhere, but he’s gone!
  • [Theodora sees Evanora by the crystal ball]
  • Theodora: What is it? Where’s the Wizard?
  • Evanora: Where’s the Wizard? With Glinda.
  • Theodora: Then it’s happening.
  • [Theodora looks into the crystal ball and sees Oz with Glinda]
  • Theodora: Oh, sister, he’s fulfilling the prophecy. He’ll bring her darkness to the light and peace to the land.
  • Evanora: Yes, I’m…I’m certain that’s what is happening. It must be.
  • [Evanora places a powder in her hand and turns it into the small wooden music box identical to the one Oz gave Theodora]
  • Theodora: Where did you get that?
  • Evanora: This? Oh, it was a gift from him. He…he came to my chambers last night. Oh, how we danced, for hours it seemed.
  • [Evanora opens the music box]
  • Evanora: Oh, I can still feel his body pressed against mine. Oh, sister, you were right about him. He is the great wizard, he must be to make me feel the way I feel.
  • [Theodora looks devastated]
  • Evanora: Oh, no. Not you too, sister?
  • Theodora: He said we would rule Oz together. He said I would be his queen.
  • Evanora: Did he?
  • [Evanora takes hold of Theodora’s hands]
    • Evanora: Are you quite sure it wasn’t you who said it to him?
  • [Theodora turns and runs out of the room, she enters her own chambers, sits in front of her dressing table and starts crying as she looks at herself in the mirror]
  • Theodora: You fool.
  • [as she cries, she cries out in pain as her tears etch permanent burn marks into her skin, Theodora stands as she looks at herself in the mirror]
  • Theodora: Serves you right!
  • [she screams out and smashes her the mirror with her hand]
  • [to her minions]
  • Evanora: I want Glinda and that wizard torn to shreds. Do not fail me a second time. Rise!
  • [her army of minions fly off and an army marches on ground to carry out her wishes; back in the cemetery with Glinda, Oz, Finley and China Girl]
  • Glinda: On the day my father died we lost a kind and noble leader, and a dark shadow was cast across this land. I’ve had to stand alone against Evanora and watch as towns were destroyed, children were orphaned and my heart’s broken. I’ve been unable to protect the good people of Oz by myself. With only a faith in my father’s prophecy, I’ve waited for you, great wizard from Kansas, to come and set things right.
  • [Oz smiles awkwardly]
  • Oz: Oh, so that’s the prophecy.
  • [Oz looks over at China Girl and Finley]

Oz: Um…you see when I uh…agreed to be king, I didn’t realize how complicated all of this was.

  • Glinda: She knows.
  • Oz: What?
  • Glinda: Evanora knows you know the truth. Now look!
  • [Glinda points ahead and they turn to see Evanora’s army marching towards them]
  • Oz: What do we do?
  • Glinda: Wizard, now’s the time.
  • Oz: The time?
  • Glinda: Use your magic.
  • Oz: Oh, my magic. Yes!
  • [Oz takes out his red handkerchief from his jacket pocket]
  • Oz: Uh…
  • [they watch as Evanora’s army break through the gates of the cemetery]
  • Oz: I think we should run!
  • Glinda: Run?
  • Oz: Yeah.
  • [Glinda turns to Finley and China Girl]
  • Glinda: You heard the Wizard, run!
  • China Girl: Let’s get out of here!
  • Oz: Let’s go!
  • [they all start running off as the army marches towards them]
  • Finley: They’re gaining on us!
  • [suddenly Glinda stops and turns]
  • Oz: What are you doing?
  • [Glinda takes her wand and draws a thick fog out of the ground]
  • Oz: Is that gonna stop ’em?
  • Glinda: I don’t know
  • [as the fog gets thicker it blinds the army and they disappear into the fog]
  • Oz: Nice work, we lost ’em.
  • Finley: Phew, that was close.
  • China Girl: Yeah.
  • [after getting rid of the marching army in the thick fog]
  • Glinda: Wait, I hear something.
  • [they all look up as they try to listen, suddenly one of Evanora’s minions, which is a flying howling monkey, comes through the fog and howls at them, the quartet scream turn and make a run for it]
  • China Girl: They’re gonna kill us!
  • [as the minions chase them through the fog, Oz finds himself alone and looks around for the others]
  • Oz: Monkey? Little China Girl?
  • China Girl: Wizard, I’m over here!
  • [Oz runs towards where he heard her voice and suddenly bumps into Finley who has China Girl on his back and she goes flying into the air]
  • China Girl: Help! Catch me, please!
  • [Oz manages to catch China Girl]
  • Oz: You alright?
  • China Girl: Yes.
  • [Finley comes up behind them]
  • Finley: I’m okay too.
  • [they hear the minions howl behind them and they start running]
  • China Girl: Go!
  • Oz: Great, stupid fog! Is this your big idea on how to save us?
  • [Glinda comes up running beside them]
  • Glinda: Well, it was the best I could do under the circumstances.
  • [as they are running away from the minions, the quartet find themselves at the end of a cliff, hanging over a bottomless pit, with Glinda holding onto Oz from falling over the edge]
  • Oz: Don’t let go! Monkey, grab her!
  • [Finley holds onto Glinda]
  • Finley: Grab my tail!
  • [China Girl holds onto Finley’s tail]
  • Finley: Ow! Not so hard!
  • [Glinda manages to pull Oz over from the edge]
  • China Girl: They’re getting closer!
  • Oz: What do we do?
  • Glinda: What do we do? Just do what I do. Unless you’ve got something?
  • Oz: Uh…no, you go.
  • [Glinda nods her head, turns, takes her cloak off and leaps off the edge of the cliff]
  • Oz: What are you doing?! Wanda!
  • [Finley, with China Girl on his back, flies over to Oz]
  • Oz: Where are you going?
  • Finley: She said do what she did.
  • Oz: Just cause she jumped off the cliff you’re gonna jump off the cliff?
  • Finley: I have wings.
  • [Finley turns and flies off]
  • Oz: What about me?!
  • [Oz turns and sees the minions getting closer, he closes his eyes and jumps off the cliff, moments later the four appear in gigantic floating bubbles]
  • [as they float through the forest in their giant bubbles]
  • Oz: It’s going’ kind of fast, huh?
  • [Oz notices a small city inside a giant bubble]
  • Oz: Hey, is that a wall?
  • Glinda: Of sorts. It repels our enemies and protects us from harm.
  • Oz: But we’re headed straight for it.
  • Glinda: Yes, we are.
  • Oz: And going very fast. How do you, uh…? Does this thing have any breaks?
  • [Oz moves his feet inside the bubble to try and slow it down]
  • Oz: I’m going too fast! I’m gonna die!
  • Glinda: You needn’t worry, Wizard. It’s a magic wall, and all good hearted souls get to pass through.
  • Oz: I’m gonna die!
  • [as they approach the city, Glinda, Finley and China Girl easily glide through the bubble barrier]
  • Oz: Wanda!
  • [as Oz approaches the city, he is stopped by the bubble barrier but finally manages to squeeze through]
  • [as they float through the city in their bubbles]
  • China Girl: It’s beautiful.
  • [as they approach the city, the people in the city cheer them]
  • Glinda: We’ve waited a long time for you, Wizard.
  • [as they land in the city, their bubbles burst, the crowd cheers them]
  • Quadling Greeter: All hail the great and powerful Oz!
  • [the crowd cheers]
  • Oz: Thank you! Well, you’re a wonderful crowd! You put the merry back in the merry land of Oz.
  • [the crowd claps and cheers Oz, in the crowd, Finley and China Girl are surrounded by couple of children]
  • Finley: Listen, I am not a toy! I am not a toy!
  • [as two girls grab hold of him]
  • Finley: Oz! Oz!
  • [Oz and Glinda walk through the crowd]
  • Oz: Hello!
  • [to Glinda]
  • Oz: What, no fireworks?
  • Glinda: What are fireworks?
  • Oz: Remind me to show you sometime.
  • [as they walk through the cheering crowds of the city]
  • Oz: You know, I should tell you…I might not actually be a wizard.
  • Glinda: Yes, I know.
  • Oz: Oh.
  • Glinda: Well, at least not any kind of wizard we were expecting.
  • Oz: Uh…you could tell?
  • Glinda: Yes. I can also tell you’re weak, selfish, slightly egotistical, and a fibber.
  • Oz: I see. Anything you don’t know about me?
  • Glinda: Whether or not you’ll save my people.
  • Oz: Uh…no. I just told you, I’m not the wizard.
  • [they turn to face the crowd]
  • Glinda: But they don’t know that. If you can make them believe, then you’re wizard enough. These are desperate times after all.
  • [Oz watches the faces in the crowd]
  • Glinda: Can you make them believe?

[whispering]

  • Oz: Will I…still get that gold?
  • Glinda: Yeah.
  • [addressing the awaiting crowd]
  • Oz: Good people of Oz. You’re wizard is here!
  • [the crowd cheers]
  • [back in Emerald City, Theodora watches Oz in the crystal ball as he’s cheered by the people of Oz with Glinda beside him, Evanora comes up behind her]
  • Evanora: What’s the matter, sister?
  • Theodora: Look at how happy they are. Do you think she’ll be his queen?
  • Evanora: Well, of course she’ll be his queen. What did you expect? Can’t compete with Glinda’s charms, no one can.
  • [Theodora starts crying again and her tears burn into her flesh]
  • Theodora: Sister, it hurts.
  • Evanora: Such is a broken heart, you’re precious wizard did that to you.
  • [Theodora turns to face Evanora]
  • Theodora: Make it stop.
  • Evanora: Would you like me to?
  • [Evanora produces a small, green apple and walks slowly towards Theodora]
  • Evanora: One bite is all it takes. One bite, and your world will change forever. One bite, and you’re heart will become impenetrable. One bite, and you and I will finally share the throne. Unless you’d rather see Oz and Glinda there.
  • [on hearing this, Theodora quickly grabs the apple from Evanora’s hand and takes a bite, as she eats the apple she feels the atmosphere in the room change and looks at Evanora]
  • Theodora: You’re the wicked one! Not Glinda.
  • [Evanora smiles and nods her head]
  • Theodora: Sister, you lied to me.
  • Evanora: It’s nice, isn’t it? How clear everything becomes.
  • [suddenly Theodora keels over in pain, she rises and stumbles across the room]
  • Theodora: What is happening to me?
  • Evanora: It’s just your heart withering away. Fear not, Theodora. Soon you will feel nothing at all, except beautiful wickedness.
  • [Theodora screams in pain again and stumbles around, finally falling to the ground behind a large table]
  • [Evanora walks closer to the table where Theodora had fallen in pain from eating the apple]
  • Evanora: Sister?
  • [suddenly a green hand with long nails comes up from behind the table and scratches the top of the table with her nails, then we see a large silhouette rising]
  • Evanora: Oh, sister, you’re hideous. I can cast a simple enchantment and have you looking just the way you were before.
  • Theodora: No! This is who I am now! I want him to see me like this. I want him to know that he was the one who made me this way!
  • [Theodora grabs a black brimmed hat and laughs maniacally]
  • Evanora: Oh, dear.
  • [back in the town where Glinda has taken Oz]
  • Glinda: It’s imperative that you behave like the great leader that they think you are. Moral is essential if we have any hope if defeating Evanora.
  • Oz: And I assume you have a plan?
  • Glinda: No, you have a plan. You’re going to lead us into battle and take back the throne.
  • Oz: And do we have an army to help do this?
  • Glinda: Of sorts.
  • [cut to scene where Glinda shows Oz her army, a simple group of townspeople]
  • Glinda: The Quadling, your highness.
  • Oz: You’re soldiers?
  • Quadling Mayor: No, sir. Farmers mostly.
  • Oz: Farmers? But you can fight?.
  • Quadling Farmer: No, sir. Many of us can hoe.
  • Oz: Oh, you can hoe.
  • Quadling Blacksmith: And I can work with iron.
  • Oz: Well, that’s good.
  • Quadling Baker: I bake bread.
  • Oz: Yummy.
  • Quadling Seamstress: I can sew.
  • Oz: Not so helpful.
  • Quadling Scarecrow Maker: I can make a scarecrow.
  • Oz: Ah. Well, that’ll come in handy.
  • Glinda: It might.
  • [Glinda shows Oz more townspeople that have volunteered to be part of the army]
  • Glinda: And these are the Tinkers.
  • [Oz looks at the old people that seem to make up most of the Tinkers and turns to Glinda]
  • Oz: Are you kidding me?
  • Master Tinker: We’re tougher than we look, Wizard.
  • [the other Tinkers raise their voices in agreement]
  • Glinda: What they lack in stamina the Tinkers make up for in ingenuity, they can build anything.
  • [the Tinkers raise their voices in agreement]
  • Elder Tinker: And I tell you what else. We can build anything.
  • Oz: Yeah, I…I got it.
  • Master Tinker: And we’re prepared to storm The Emerald City.
  • [the other Tinkers raise their voice again to agree]
  • Oz: If you don’t keel over on the way there.
  • [Glinda looks at Oz in anger and grabs his arm to walk him away from the Tinkers]
  • Oz: Ow!
  • [Glinda shows Oz another group of townspeople that have volunteered to be part of the army]
  • Glinda: And Finally, the Munchkins.
  • [a group of very tall soldiers, march over to Oz as they play music]
  • Oz: Please tell me you gentlemen can fight.
  • Munchkin #1: No, but we make pretty clothes.
  • Munchkin #2: Also we sing.
  • Oz: Ah, no. That won’t be necessary.
  • Glinda: I like it, I think it’s cute. I hope you like it.
  • [suddenly the tall soldiers burst open their long jackets to reveal several small men all sitting on each other’s shoulders and they burst into a song and start dancing]
  • Oz: Alright, enough!
  • [the Munchkins continue to sing and dance]
  • Oz: Alright, that’s enough! Munchkins, stop!
  • [suddenly the Munchkins stop and everyone looks at Oz]
  • Glinda: They do make beautiful clothes.
  • Oz: Alright. Now, listen, Wanda.
  • Glinda: Glinda.
  • [Oz nods his head, then turns to the Munchkins]
  • Oz: Guys, um…take five.
  • [referring to all the Quadlings, Tinkers and Munchkins]
  • Oz: Uh…Glinda, these are all very lovely people. But do you honestly believe that they can kill a wicked witch and an army of flying baboons?
  • Glinda: I don’t expect them to kill anyone.
  • Oz: What do you mean?
  • Glinda: I mean the good people of Oz are forbidden to kill.
  • Oz: Forbidden to…
  • [Oz turns and looks at the people then turns to Glinda again]
  • Oz: You want me to lead an army that can’t kill?
  • Glinda: If this was easy we wouldn’t need a wizard, would we?
  • Quadling Woman: Something’s wrong!
  • Munchkin #3: Look!
  • [everyone looks up and sees a mysterious black cloud in the sky surrounding the barrier around the city]
  • Glinda: The Wicked Witch isn’t powerful enough to get through the wall.
  • Oz: It looks like she’s managing.
  • Glinda: Not by herself she isn’t.
  • Oz: What does that mean? Is someone helping her?
  • [Glinda turns to the townspeople]
  • Glinda: Everyone, take cover! Run, quickly! Take cover! Take the children to safety! Run!
  • [suddenly a fireball breaks through the barrier of the city and shoots a fireball into the city]
  • Oz: Glinda!
  • [the fireball explodes into the grounds, then a figure emerges from the fire, it’s Theodora transfigured into a green-skinned, black-suited witch, she looks around at the people]
  • Theodora: There’s so much good here, it sickens me.
  • [she jumps out towards the Tinkers, making them scream in terror]
  • Theodora: Still think your wizard can save you, from the likes of me?!
  • [she quickly glides over to the Quadlings]
  • Theodora: Speak up or I will tear out your tongue!
  • [to Glinda, as they watch the green-skinned witch]
  • Oz: Who’s that?
  • [Theodora hears this and faces him]
  • Theodora: Don’t you recognize me, Wizard?
  • [she quickly glides over towards him]
  • Theodora: Have I changed so much?
  • Oz: Theodora?
  • Theodora: May I have this dance?
  • [she bows her head mockingly, then uses her powers to move Oz like a puppet and float him above the ground, Oz screams out in terror, Theodora makes him dance as he floats in the air]
  • Oz: I get it! You’re a little upset!
  • Glinda: Theodora, stop. You’re hurting him.
  • [Theodora makes Oz spin before making him crash against a wall and dropping to the ground, she slowly walks towards him]
  • Oz: Theodora, what happened to you?
  • Theodora: You happened to me!
  • [Theodora produces a fireball in her hand, but Glinda quickly extinguishes the fire using her wand]
  • Glinda: This isn’t you, it’s your sister. She’s worked her magic on you. I’d hoped you’d be able to see through her.
  • Theodora: Oh, Glinda. So naive, just like your father. That’s why it was so easy for my sister to kill him.
  • Glinda: She only killed a man, not what he believed in.
  • Quadling Woman with Broom: Be gone, witch! Before the wizard makes mush of you!
  • [the rest of the townspeople shout out in agreement]
  • Theodora: Oh, how sweet! You all believe in him! Well, so did I once.
  • [to Glinda]
  • Theodora: And as for you, my pretty one. When I return with my sister and her army, the Yellow Brick Road will be red with the blood of every Tinker, farmer and Munchkin in your kingdom.
  • Glinda: You underestimate us, Theodora. We are a strong and united people, now the wizard is here to lead us.
  • [addressing all the people]
  • Theodora: And as for your wizard, he will be the first to die! And you will all see that he’s nothing but a deceitful, selfish and extremely mortal man!
  • [referring to the broom in the Quadling woman’s hand]
  • Theodora: Give me that!
  • [Theodora makes the broom from the woman’s hand glide over into her own hand, then looks at Oz]
  • Theodora: It was a broom that you wanted, wasn’t it, Wizard?
  • [she gives an evil laugh as she rides away on the broom, leaving a trail of black smoke behind her, the townspeople panic and start running off as they watch Theodora leave]
  • Glinda: It’s alright. It’s alright! She’s gone now! Don’t be frightened! Now that the wizard is with us.
  • [Glinda turns and sees that Oz has disappeared, with only his hat lying on the ground]
  • Glinda: Wizard?
  • [Glinda finds Oz in his quarters, where he’s quickly packing his bags for a hasty escape]
  • Glinda: Leaving! But you promised to help us.
  • Oz: Yeah, well, that was before I knew what we were up against. An army, and yet another wicked witch? This one bent on destroying everyone, especially me!
  • Glinda: We can defeat them. There must be something, something we haven’t thought of, something that we’re not seeing, something we’re just on the verge of!
  • Oz: Glinda, you need a real wizard! Better yet, a general!
  • Glinda: But you’re all I have!
  • [she walks towards Oz]
  • Glinda: So you’re not the wizard I was expecting. So you don’t have the powers I thought you’d have. But you’re here, there must be a reason. Maybe you’re capable of more than you know.
  • Oz: Glinda, I wish I had the answer. But I’m just a con man, I’m a carnival magician. I’m just not the man you want me to be.
  • [China Girl interrupts them as she enters the room]
  • China Girl: Someone needs to tuck me in.
  • [Glinda turns to face her]
  • Glinda: Yes, of course.
  • [Glinda walks over to China Girl]
  • Glinda: Allow me.
  • China Girl: My papa used to do it.
  • Glinda: I see. Perhaps you’d prefer the wizard then?
  • China Girl: Yes, please.
  • [Glinda turns to Oz as he finishes his packing, she clears her throat and smiles at him]
  • Oz: Alright.
  • [Oz places China Girl in her bed]
  • Oz: In you go. There you are.
  • [Oz pulls the covers up, but China Girl stops him]
  • China Girl: Just a moment.
  • [she turns and pats her pillow]
  • China Girl: Bring forth the covers now.
  • Oz: Yes, ma’am.
  • [Oz brings the covers over her]
  • Oz: Comfy?
  • [China Girl turns to sleep]
  • Oz: Alright, good night.
  • [Oz turns to leave]
  • China Girl: Do you grant wishes?
  • Oz: Do I what?
  • China Girl: Grant wishes? The real wizard could grant wishes.
  • Oz: Oh.
  • China Girl: People would travel to The Emerald City and ask him for things, and if they were good and noble wishes, he would grant them.
  • Oz: Is that right?
  • China Girl: Do you know what I’d wish for?
  • Oz: Mm, pretty dress?
  • [China Girl looks down in sadness]
  • China Girl: To have my family back.
  • Oz: I know. I’m sorry, I can’t grant wishes. I’m not that kind of wizard.
  • China Girl: That’s what I thought.
  • [Oz sits on the side of her bed]
  • Oz: You see where I come from, there aren’t any real wizards. Although, there is one; Thomas Alva Edison, The Wizard of Menlo Park. A truly great man.
  • China Girl: Did he grant wishes?
  • Oz: No. But he looks into the future and make it real. He created the electric light, the phonograph, he created a camera that could take moving pictures.
  • China Girl: Pictures that move?
  • Oz: Yeah. Can you imagine? And all he had was a little bit of wire and some glass. With almost nothing he made the impossible real.
  • China Girl: Is that the kind of wizard you are?
  • Oz: It’s the kind of wizard I’d like to be.
  • China Girl: But you are that kind, I can tell.
  • [China Girl yawns]
  • China Girl: I’d rather you grant wishes, but that’s a good wizard too.
  • [China Girl puts her head down on her pillow]
  • China Girl: Good night, Wizard.
  • [as China Girl falls asleep, Oz suddenly realizes what he can do to help Glinda and the town]
  • [Oz rushes into Glinda’s chambers]
  • Oz: Glinda, I’ve got it!
  • Glinda: What have you got?
  • Oz: I got a way out of this mess!
  • [Oz places a book in front of Glinda]
  • Glinda: What is it?
  • Oz: A battle plan.
  • [Glinda opens the book, which is titled ‘Mastering Magic’]
  • Oz: It’s all in there. Illusion, misdirects, sleight of hand. Look, I know I’m not the wizard that you were expecting, but I might just be the wizard that you need.
  • Glinda: You said you were just a con man.
  • Oz: Precisely.
  • Glinda: Nothing but a trickster?
  • Oz: Yes.
  • Glinda: A terrible cheat?
  • Oz: The best there is.
  • Glinda: Carnival magician’s going to put on a show.
  • Oz: I’ll put on a show of a lifetime, the likes of which the land of Oz has never seen! Magic, mystery, prestidigitation! It’ll be my greatest trick yet.
  • [Oz meets with the Tinkers]
  • Oz: Tinkers, gather round!
  • Master Tinker: Quickly now!
  • Oz: This is what you’re gonna build.
  • [Oz places his plan on the table]
  • Oz: Where I come from, this is called a praxinoscope. Although I’ve made a few modifications.
  • [he points to his drawing]
  • Oz: It allows you to project an image into space.
  • Master Tinker: Impossible!
  • Oz: Nothing’s impossible, if you put your mind to it.
  • Master Tinker: Bully.
  • Tinkers: Bully!
  • [Glinda shows Oz the map leading to the Emerald City]
  • Glinda: These three roads all lead to The Emerald City. To the East are the deadly Poppy Fields, you’ll have to steer clear of them.
  • Oz: Why’s that?
  • Glinda: One good whiff, and it’s everlasting sleep.
  • China Girl: And we’re not exactly a terrifying army when we’re awake.
  • Oz: Alright, we’ll steer clear.
  • [Oz thinks for a moment]
  • Oz: Of maybe not.
  • [showing Tinkers how to make black powder]
  • Oz: In carnival business, glass is always good, gives the audience a little wow. You gentlemen will be combining sulfur rock nitrate of potash and charcoal to create what is commonly known as black powder.
  • [he gives a little demonstration of the black powder which amazes the Tinkers; Glinda gives instructions to the Quadlings]
  • Glinda: We need two hundred mails paid delivered to the main road by noon.
  • [we see montage of how all the townspeople are working to put together everything they will need for Oz’s plan]
  • [back on Emerald City, Evanora addresses her army with Theodora standing beside her]
  • Evanora: My very own Winkie guards, soon you will be facing Glinda and her army of weaklings. And when they see our towering might, they will run and flee for the woods.
  • [Theodora steps forward and shouts]
  • Theodora: No! We shall not let them flee! We shall show them no mercy!
  • [the army cheers]
  • Master Tinker: I’ve added an adjustable lens to your design, along with a few other things. Have a look.
  • [Oz and the Master Tinker put on their goggles and the movie projector is turned on]
  • Oz: Yes! Edison himself would be proud.
  • [Master Tinker stops the projector]
  • Oz: Now, there’s something else I need you to do. But, I’d rather you just keep it between us.
  • Master Tinker: Yes?
  • Oz: Do you know how to build a hot air balloon?
  • [Oz meets Glinda in the middle of the town]
  • Oz: This is all very impressive, but you still haven’t told me how you plan to get this thing into The Emerald City.
  • Glinda: Relax, I know someone.
  • Oz: What do you mean, you know someone?
  • [Glinda looks down and winks at someone behind Oz]
  • Knuck: Hello, Wizard.
  • [Oz turns to face Knuck]
  • Oz: Well, well, well. If it isn’t old sour puss.
  • Knuck: Hm! My name is Knuck!
  • Glinda: Now you two be nice to each other.
  • Knuck: Let’s move it, Wizard!
  • Oz: Can you give me a break?
  • Knuck: I’ll break your nose!
  • [Knuck turns to leave, Oz faces Glinda]
  • Oz: I guess I’m up. Time to do what I do, right? Cue the con man.
  • Glinda: Would you stop? A con man couldn’t have done all this, you’re much more than that.
  • Oz: Well, then it looks like I’ve got you fooled too.
  • Glinda: The only person you got fooled is yourself.
  • [Glinda takes Oz’s hat off and kisses him on the forehead]
  • Glinda: For protection. Not that you need it.
  • [Oz and Glinda address the townspeople as they prepare to leave]
  • Oz: Great people of Oz, today we fight to free the land from the villainy of the Wicked Witches.
  • [the crowd cheers]
  • Oz: We are few, but we are mighty!
  • [the crowd cheers again]
  • Oz: Quadlings! Tinkers! Munchkins! We face great odds, but we are armed with our courage, our hard work, and most of all, our faith in one another. We have nothing to fear as long as we believe. For when we do believe, anything is possible!
  • [the crowd cheers]
  • Oz: Onwards!
  • [Oz and Knuck ride towards Emerald City, they stop as they approach the gates]
  • Winkie Gate Keeper: Halt!
  • [Oz, who’s dressed as a Winkie guard, addresses the Winkie guard at the gate]
  • Oz: Good day there, fellow Winkie guardsman.
  • Winkie Gate Keeper: What is your business here?
  • [one of the Munchkins hidden inside Oz’s coat whispers]
  • Munchkin Carriage Driver: Supplies for battle.
  • Oz: We bring supplies for battle.
  • Winkie Gate Keeper: I was told of no such delivery. Where are your papers of transit?
  • [suddenly he hits the Winkie guard over the head with his cane]
  • Knuck: Do you not recognize me?! I’m Knuck, the city herald.
  • Winkie Gate Keeper: Sir, I’m just trying to do my…
  • [Knuck hits him over the head again]
  • Winkie Gate Keeper: What I meant was…
  • Knuck: Hm?
  • [the gate keeper looks over to the other guard at the gate]
  • Winkie Gate Keeper: Let them pass! Let them pass.
  • [the gate is opened and Oz’s carriage slowly drives forward, as they enter through, Knuck hits the gate keeper on the head one more time]
  • [out at the edge of Emerald City Glinda casts a spell which send thick fog across the landscape, Evanora and Theodora watch this from the top of the city gates]
  • Evanora: What’s this?
  • [they watch as an army of soldiers stomps through the fog, toward the city]
  • Evanora: They dare march on us!
  • [Theodora turns to their own army and screams out]
  • Theodora: Tear them apart!
  • [a fleet of the flying baboons tear into the soldiers, but they find that the soldiers are just clothing stuffed in hay and are mechanical scarecrows]
  • Evanora: It’s a trick.
  • [we see the townspeople making the scarecrows move, as the fog disappears we see that it was covering the Poppy Field, Evanora sees this and shouts to her minions]
  • Evanora: Retreat! Retreat!
  • [the baboons starts falling as they become unconscious from the deadly fumes of the Poppy Field]
  • Theodora: Curse you!
  • [the townspeople, who were hiding in the woods all cheer as they watch the baboons fall]
  • Evanora: Ooh, it’s not over yet.
  • [after the baboons have fallen]
  • Glinda: The fog is lifting! Quadlings, fall back! Into the woods!
  • Quadling Man: Watch out!
  • [suddenly two flying baboons grab hold of Glinda, then Evanora flies in and cast a spell, which shoots green lightning at Glinda and she drops her wand into the field, China Girl, who’s watching all this quickly grabs hold of Glinda’s wand; Evanora instructs her minions]
  • Evanora: Away with her.
  • [the baboons fly off with Glinda as their hostage, Evanora looks for Glinda’s wand where it fell but does not see it, as she turns to leave she hears a noise and we see China Girl is hiding behind a tree holding the wand, Evanora turns back and looks into the woods, sees nothing and flies off, China Girl runs into the field holding the wand]
  • [as they ride inside Emerald City, they stop the carriage and Oz takes off his disguise, they are then met by a group of Munchkins]
  • Munchkin Rebel: Herald!
  • Female Munchkin Rebel: Great Wizard!
  • Oz: Who’s this?
  • Knuck: They must be the underground.
  • [to the Munchkins]
  • Knuck: Unload the carriage.
  • Munchkin Rebel: Yes, sir!
  • [to his group]
  • Munchkin Rebel: To the rear. Let’s go.
  • [they run to the back of the carriage]
  • Munchkin Rebel: You two, get the trolley.
  • [to Oz]
  • Knuck: Everything’s ready. All we need now is you.
  • Finley: Yeah, come on.
  • Oz: I just have to do one thing first.
  • Knuck: There’s no time.
  • Munchkin Rebel: Put this carriage in position.
  • Munchkin Carriage Driver: Yes, sir!
  • Munchkin Rebel: Hurry.
  • [the carriage is ridden off]
  • Knuck: I told Glinda you’d do this, she said I was wrong about you. I guess I wasn’t.
  • Oz: What are you talking about?
  • Knuck: I’m talking about that thing the Tinker built, the balloon!
  • Finley: What balloon?
  • [Oz looks up and sees the balloon floating into the city]
  • Oz: That’s my cue. Alright, you guys. Just remember, stick to the plan.
  • [Oz turns to leave]
  • Finley: Stick to the plan? The plan was you! We’re supposed to stick to you!
  • Oz: You guys will do great. So long.
  • Knuck: Come back! We can’t do it alone!
  • [Oz goes off]
  • Finley: Wizard!
  • Knuck: Wizard, I don’t know what to do!
  • [Glinda is taken to the center of Emerald City and her hands tied to two posts, Evanora floats around the people gathered in the city]
  • Evanora: Citizens of Emerald City, witness what happens when you defy me!
  • [the crowd of people all shout in anger for Evanora to release Glinda]
  • Evanora: Glinda outdid herself, I’ll admit!
  • Emerald City Man#1: She’s the real witch!
  • Emerald City Man#2: Leave her alone! We know the truth! You poisoned the King!
  • [to her army]
  • Evanora: Get them back to control!
  • Emerald City Man#2: The citizens of Emerald City will not tolerate it!
  • Emerald City Man#1: We will not!
  • Evanora: Silence! Silence!
  • [Evanora turns to Glinda]
  • Evanora: Ooh, what should I do now?
  • Glinda: I’d get your sister and fly out of here.
  • Evanora: Really?
  • Glinda: While you still can.
  • Evanora: Well, I think I’m going to do something quite different. And I’m going to do it, ooh, very, very, slowly. Because I just can’t take light off that pretty, pretty face.
  • [she strokes Glinda’s face with her finger]
  • Evanora: Ooh, I’m going to wipe out your light until there is nothing left but my darkness. I have been waiting for this for a long time.
  • [Evanora starts torturing Glinda with lightning]
  • [as Glinda is being tortured, Finley and Knuck watch Oz through the binoculars, as he climbs onto the hot air balloon and depositing bags of gold]
  • Finley: Oh, no. He said it was going to be his greatest trick yet.
  • Knuck: Did he tell you the trick was on us?
  • [from a distance, Theodora sees Oz stealing the gold]
  • Theodora: How predictable.
  • [to Glinda as she continues to torture her]
  • Evanora: I knew that buffoon couldn’t be the Wizard.
  • [she shoot lightning at Glinda again, then Theodora flies in with her broom]
  • Theodora: Out of my way!
  • [she lands next to Glinda]
  • Theodora: Give up, Glinda. Why do you continue to resist?
  • Glinda: Because I believe in the Wizard.
  • Theodora: So did I once. Behold!
  • [she turns and looks up, Oz’s hot air balloon floats through, everyone looks at it in wonder]
  • Theodora: Look! Your wizard!
  • Emerald City Citizen #1: Where’s he going?
  • Emerald City Citizen #2: He’s abandoning us.
  • Emerald City Citizen #3: How could he?
  • [Theodora produces a fireball and shoots it at the balloon, the balloon explodes sending it crashing to the ground in a giant plume of black smoke with all the gold falling everywhere]
  • China Girl: No!
  • [China Girl, still holding Glinda’s wand, cries as she watches this, thinking Oz has been killed]
  • [after the balloon has exploded and crashed]
  • Evanora: Oh. Well not so great and powerful after all.
  • [Glinda, shocked by Oz’s death, cries, Finley walks up to the remains of the balloon and finds Oz’s hat, he picks it up and starts crying, then he sees a Winkie guard stand next to him, he looks up and sees that it’s Oz]
  • Oz: Hello, monkey.
  • Finley: Oz!
  • [Finley flies up into Oz’s arms and embraces him]
  • Finley: I thought you were dead!
  • Oz: Ssh! You cried pretty hard. Is that for me?
  • Finley: Oh, no. Some of the smoke got in my eyes.
  • [Oz smiles]
  • Oz: Oh, okay. Right.
  • Finley: Wow. You fooled everybody. That was your greatest trick yet.
  • Oz: That was just the opening act.
  • [to the citizens of Emerald City]
  • Evanora: Let this be the final word. Your prophecy is dead, like the king who bespoke it and the Wizard who tried to fulfill it. All dead.
  • [Oz looks over to Master Tinker who’s standing behind them a little distance away, he then turns to Finley]
  • Oz: It’s show time.
  • [to the citizens of Emerald City]
  • Theodora: And they will be joined in death by Glinda the Good.
  • [Theodora and Evanora stand on each side of Glinda]
  • Theodora: Farewell.
  • Evanora: Say hello to your daddy for me.
  • [Evanora produces lightning with her hands and Theodora produces fireballs]
  • Glinda: The dreams of the people live on.
  • [as Theodora and Evanora are about to torture Glinda, suddenly plumes of smoke appear around the city center followed by a massive explosion in the middle of the town, then Oz’s ghostly face appears on the plume of smoke]
  • Oz: Aaah! Fear me not, good people of Oz, fear me not. For it is I, the Great and Powerful Wizard of Oz!
  • Evanora: More tricks! How dare you defy us!
  • Oz: Dare? How dare you, wicked sisters? No one defies Oz!
  • Evanora: Guards, destroy him!
  • Winkie General: Forward! Attack!
  • [the guards throw their spears at Oz face in the plume of smoke, the spears just pass through the smoke landing on the ground]
  • [Oz roars and the crowd of people, including the guards, run off]
  • Evanora: Guards! Come back here this instance!
  • [we then see Oz, Knuck, Finley and Master Tinker sit huddled in the caravan at the center of the city, projecting a moving Oz’s image onto the black smoke as Oz puts on the show]
  • Oz: You thought you could kill me? Me? Thanks to you, I’ve shed my mortal shell and taken my true exterior form. I’m now more powerful than ever, I’m invincible! You still doubt me?
  • Theodora: I defy you!
  • [Theodora throws a fireball at Oz’s ghostly image which makes Oz’s image disappear, making everyone think Theodora has destroyed Oz]
  • Evanora: Beautifully done, sister.
  • Theodora: Thank you.
  • [inside the carriage Oz looks out for the right moment to reappear]
  • Finley: Hurry! You’re taking too much time!
  • Oz: Hold. Hold.
  • Finley: They think they’re winning!
  • Oz: Turn it back on.
  • [Master Tinker turns the handle to put the projector on, but nothing happens]
  • Finley: What?
  • Oz: Turn it back on!
  • Master Tinker: Oh, we got a loose wire.
  • [Finley slaps his head in frustration]
  • Master Tinker: A screw is stuck.
  • Oz: Hold on! Use this.
  • [Oz throws Master Tinker his Swiss army knife]
  • Master Tinker: Got it!
  • Oz: Great!
  • [Master Tinker turns the projector back on, and the town centers explodes with a plume of smoke with Oz face appearing again in the smoke]
  • Theodora: I stopped it!
  • Oz: Aah! You cannot defeat me! I’m immortal! I’m the Great and Powerful Wizard of Oz!
  • [the citizens of Emerald City cheer]
  • Oz: Now witness and observe as I unleash the star. Behold!
  • [everyone looks up into the sky as a fireworks are set off, they watch in amazement and horror as the fireworks explode in the sky; Glinda smiles to herself as she watches]
  • Glinda: So those are fireworks.
  • [we see the Munchkins setting off the fireworks from the woods]
  • [as Evanora watches the fireworks in amazement]
  • Evanora: He is the Wizard.
  • [Evanora becomes frightened as the fireworks explode in the sky and she runs off, Knuck watches her from inside the carriage]
  • Knuck: We got Evanora! She’s on the run!
  • Oz: Alright! We got one!
  • Finley: Yeah!
  • [Evanora runs into the castle]
  • Theodora: Comes back here, you coward!
  • [as everyone is distracted, China Girl sneaks up to Glinda with her wand]
  • China Girl: Glinda!
  • Glinda: It’s you!
  • [Glinda motions for China Girl to hide behind her; Theodora is still distracted by Evanora running off]
  • Theodora: And you said I was the weak one!
  • [Theodora turns to look at Glinda as China Girl tries to hide behind her, Theodora then turns to Oz’s ghostly image]
  • Theodora: I may not be able to kill you, but I can kill the one you love!
  • Glinda: Now.
  • China Girl: Okay.
  • [China Girl tries to pass Glinda’s wand into her hand]
  • Glinda: Higher!
  • China Girl: I’m trying!
  • [as Theodora turns to throw fireballs at Glinda she sees Glinda has gone]
  • [as Glinda disappears, the Munchkins start shooting fireworks at Theodora, giving the illusion that it’s coming from Oz’s mouth]
  • Oz: Be gone, Wicked Witch! Be gone!
  • Theodora: I hate you.
  • [Theodora gets on her broom and flies off]
  • Oz: Be gone forever more!
  • [to Oz and the others inside the carriage]
  • Knuck: The witch is gone! The witch is gone!
  • Master Tinker: Bully! Bully!
  • Knuck: I knew we could do it!
  • Master Tinker: Right.
  • [as Theodora is flying off]
  • Oz: Theodora, I know your wickedness is not your doing. And should you ever again find the goodness within you, you are welcome to return.
  • [Theodora looks at Oz’s ghostly image for a moment before screaming out]
  • Theodora: Never!
  • [she does an evil laugh and flies away on her broom]
  • [inside the castle, Evanora is confronted by Glinda seated in her father’s throne]
  • Glinda: Not so fast. You and I aren’t finished yet.
  • [Glinda rises and starts walking towards Evanora]
  • Evanora: You have the throne, Glinda. What more could you want?
  • Glinda: You can’t give me that. You took what mattered most to me, my father.
  • [Evanora starts firing up her lightning with her hand behind her back]
  • Glinda: I’ll never again feel the comfort of his kindness. But I’ll settle for the freedom of his people.
  • Evanora: Of course, Glinda. I think at the very least they deserve that.
  • [suddenly Evanora shoots lightning at Glinda and Glinda is thrown across the room, Evanora rises into the air and watches Glinda]
  • Evanora: What’s the matter, Glinda? Out of bubbles?
  • Glinda: Don’t need them. Bubbles are just for show.
  • [Glinda rises into the air and Evanora shoots more lightning at her but Glinda deflects the attacks with her wand, Evanora grabs Glinda by the throat, and Glinda grasps at Evanora’s chest, their attacks rebound off one another and they land, painfully, on the ground]
  • [as Evanora walks slowly towards Glinda, she raises her hands to deliver the killing blow, but suddenly finds that she lacks the magic, she falls to the ground and looks at Glinda]
  • Evanora: What have you done?
  • [Glinda looks down at her hand and sees that Evanora’s emerald necklace that had been around her neck, the source of her power is in her hand]
  • [Evanora suddenly keels over, and starts crawling away, Glinda follows her and her sees nails grow long and dirty, she suddenly faces Glinda and we sees her beautiful features have disappeared and she’s turned into an old woman]
  • Evanora: Look what you’ve done to me!
  • Glinda: Now everyone will see you as you truly are.
  • [Evanora continues to crawl away on her hands and knees]
  • Glinda: In the name of my father, I banish you from The Emerald City, never to return.
  • [suddenly Evanora lunges at Glinda, but Glinda, uses her wand to repel her attack and sends her flying through the castle window, she’s caught by a pair of flying baboons and carried off into the distance]
  • [after Evanora and Theodora have left Emerald City, as dawn sets Glinda addresses the people of Oz in the city center]
  • Glinda: Good people of Oz, I have here a message from the great Wizard himself.
  • [she starts reading the message]
  • Glinda: With little more than pluck and belief, we made the impossible happen. As your wizard, I hereby decree the land of Oz will forever be free.
  • [everyone cheers and celebrates]
  • [inside the castle in the throne room]
  • Master Tinker: Okay. Close the curtains, please!
  • [China Girl and Finley try to close the large curtains]
  • China Girl: I’m trying!
  • Master Tinker: Alright! Let’s give it a try!
  • [Master Tinker turns on his machine which brings out a large plume of smoke over the throne and Oz’s face appears in the smoke]
  • Oz: Is it on? This thing working?
  • Glinda: It’s wonderful.
  • [Glinda enters the throne room]
  • Oz: Well, if it isn’t the most beautiful witch in all of Oz. Hi, Glinda.
  • [Glinda bows her head]
  • Glinda: Hello, Wizard.
  • [to Master Tinker as he turns off the machine]
  • Glinda: Well done, Tinker. Your machine worked beautifully.
  • Master Tinker: That’s just workmanship. What you displayed was real courage. Your father would have been more than proud. He would have marveled at the woman you’ve become.
  • [in the throne room, Oz steps out from behind the curtains and faces Glinda, Master Tinker, *Knuck, Finley and China Girl]
  • Oz: Zim-zala-bim! Excellent work, everyone. Now we’re ready. In case anyone wants to speak with the Wizard. Now remember, Oscar Diggs died so that the Wizard of Oz could live. When those witches come back, and they will come back, we’re going to need everyone to believe.
  • China Girl: You’re secret is safe with us.
  • Oz: Good. Now it’s time for some gifts.
  • China Girl: Gifts?
  • Knuck: Gifts!
  • [Knuck starts playing his trumpet]
  • Master Tinker: Knuck, not now.
  • China Girl: What kind of gifts?
  • Oz: Well, you know I can’t grant wishes, so this will have to do. First, the Master Tinker; to the man who can make anything, my lucky…
  • [he pulls out his Swiss army knife]
  • Oz: Uh…thingamajig. May it assist you in the reconstruction of The Emerald City.
  • [Master Tinker takes the knife]
  • Master Tinker: I will cherish this forever.
  • Oz: Thank you for your faith in me.
  • [Oz turns to Knuck]
  • Oz: And now, the Sour Puss.
  • Knuck: My name is Knuck!
  • Oz: Sour Puss, I grant you something you are in need of most. Something that where I come from *can turn the saddest day into a happy one.
  • [he takes out from his jacket pocket a novelty mask with a smile painted and gives it to Knuck]
  • Knuck: I don’t want that!
  • Oz: It is yours.
  • Knuck: Take it back!
  • Oz: I cannot.
  • [Knuck reluctantly accepts the mask]
  • Knuck: Knuck, you look nice with a smile.
  • [Knuck smiles]
  • Oz: You do look nice.
  • Knuck: Thank you.
  • Oz: Finley, you stood by my side when any monkey in his right mind would have flown away. To you I give something that I’ve never given to anyone.
  • [Oz takes off his hat and blows the dust off the top of it]
  • Oz: My friendship.
  • [he gives his hat to Finley]
  • Oz: Now you’re my partner, you’re my friend.
  • Finley: That’s all I ever really wanted.
  • [Finley smiles with happiness]
  • China Girl: My turn! My turn!
  • Oz: Come here.
  • [Oz picks up China Girl]
  • Oz: I’m afraid I can’t give you what I know you want most of all. All I can offer you is this.
  • [he turns and holds out his hand towards Glinda and the others]
  • Oz: It’s us. I know it’s not the family that you had in mind.
  • [tears well up in China Girl’s eyes]
  • China Girl: It’s perfect.
  • [China Girl embraces Oz]
  • China Girl: Thank you.
  • [China Girl runs to Glinda, who picks her up gently]
  • China Girl: I wonder what you’re gonna get.
  • Glinda: Oh, I don’t need anything, child.
  • [China Girl turns to Oz]
  • China Girl: You better have something for Glinda.
  • Oz: But of course. I’ve saved the best for last.
  • [China Girl jumps out of Glinda’s hands]
  • [Oz takes Glinda’s hand and takes her towards the curtain]
  • Oz: For you, a sight envied by all and seen by none. You’ll be astounded by what you find behind the curtain.
  • [they step inside and Oz closes the curtain, Oz and Glinda face each other]
  • Glinda: Oh, my. It’s very tight in here.
  • Oz: It’s nice, isn’t it?
  • Glinda: I know what you’re up to, Wizard.
  • Oz: What? I’m just giving you a tour. And I want to thank you, for opening my eyes.
  • Glinda: And what do you see?
  • Oz: That I have everything I ever wanted.
  • [they both smile]
  • [last lines]
  • Glinda: For the record, I know you had it in you all along.
  • Oz: Greatness?
  • Glinda: No, better than that. Goodness.
  • [Oz kisses her and as they are kissing, Glinda’s foot goes up and hits the machine to turn on which lights up their shadow behind the curtain and the others see their shadow as they kiss]
  • Master Tinker: Now, Knuck.
  • [Knuck starts playing his trumpet as Finley, China Girl and Master Tinker smile and the camera pans out towards window showing Emerald City]
  • [End of Oz: The Great and Powerful]
